sisyphus: All of the blood shed today was in the B group. Finegold beat Ippolito.

IM Antal - GM Diamant is listed as 1-0, though the result is a little mysterious. The last move in the score is 44...Qc7+, and White has one second left, but the position appears to be equal.

Susan Polgar: After 44...Qc7+, Antal played g3 and Diamant lost on time.

I posted the link the chessgames.com discussion of the B group here:

sisyphus: Thank you for clarifying that, Susan.

P.S.: Does anyone know what the time control for these events is?

Susan Polgar: G/90 with 30 seconds increment starting on move 1.

sisyphus: 32.Qd7+ gave away much of Perelshtyn's advantage against Papp, but he still has the upper hand. 33.Bxg6 is cute.

sisyphus: With both players down to increments, Papp had an opportunity to claim a draw after 43.Nd6, but turned it down. Pereleshtyn blundered with 44.g3, giving Black a clear advantage.

sisyphus: Could be three decisive games today, all won by Black. Robson beat Ippolito and Antal beat Rensch. Pereleshtyn had a winning advantage against Papp, but gave it up as the clock wound down.

Papp has bishop and knight against rook and pawn, the sort of position I wouldn't want to play at 30 seconds a move.

sisyphus: Pereleshtyn - Papp draw by repetition in 73.

sisyphus: Finegold beat Kulasevic in 15! After three rounds he's +2.

Somehow, though, I think an IM shouldn't get his queen trapped like that.

Sep-21-09  Blunderdome: Anyone know what Robson will need to score for the norm here?

parmetd: 6 is the required score for a norm.
Sep-22-09  Aleking: I am pulling for Finegold!!!

Susan Polgar: Antal and Finegold are on pace for their final GM norm. Papp and Robson are still in it. Rensch is on pace for his final IM norm. Still way too early though.

Best wishes,

parmetd: Finegold at 4/5 with 4 rounds to go he only needs 2 more points for his 6pt cutoff!! he can get 2 wins to secure the bacon or try to draw his way out. Go finegold go!
Sep-24-09  Aleking: Finegold wins in rd 6 .
Way to go Ben !

PhilFeeley: Ray's in a bit of trouble. He needs 2.5/3 for a GM norm. His opponent needs 3/3 for his GM norm. It looks like he's going for it:

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 Nc6 4. Ngf3 Nf6 5. e5 Nd7 6. Bd3 f6 7. Ng5 Ndxe5 8. dxe5 fxg5 9 Qh5+ g6 10. Bxg6 Kd7 11. c4 Nxe5 12. Bc2 Qf6 13. 0-0 c6 14. cxd5 exd5 15. Nb3 Qf7...

parmetd: Man the Antal-Robson game is down to the wire!! But both players need to winner to keep their GM norm hopes alive in this tourney. Robson down to seconds with R+N+PvsQ to Antals 19 minutes!!

Robson can afford to draw (then has to win two in a row) but neither can afford to lose (Antal can't even draw needs 3/3).

Finegold already 5.5/7!! Needs .5/2 to make his Gm norm!

Rensch needs 1/2 to make IM norm.

parmetd: Nevermind now its a simple Fortress draw so Antal is out of the norm hunt and Robson needs 2/2.

dx9293: <parametd> I noticed that Danny Rensch could have had things break perfectly for him to make his IM title (needed 1.5/3 going into Round 7) without stress:

-He had White vs. Bhat and played the drawing line vs. the ...Bc5 Scotch. Bhat doesn't really have a reason to go for a win at this point.

-He gets Finegold in Round 8, who needs just half a point to become a GM: potentially an easy short draw for Rensch.

-He gets Robson in Round 9 who, if he would have won in Rounds 7 and 8, would have only needed a last round draw for the GM title: another potential short draw!

Now Danny needs 1 out of 2. I would still assume a short draw against Finegold, then a very interesting game Rensch-Robson in the last round (especially if Robson wins against Diamant in Round 8). If Robson doesn't win his Round 8 game, Robson may just make a draw in the last round.

To me, the B tournament is much more dramatic than the A tournament, with 4 players needing their last norm for a GM or IM title!

parmetd: Only 3 players now. Antal is out.

Its just Robson, Finegold and Rensch.

Sep-26-09  arthurp: Curious!Benjamin should,I hope, get his GM title after this tourney! Why has it taken him 20 yrs. to do so?

Phony Benoni: Lack of opportunities is part of it. If you're looking for chess titles, living in Michigan is not like living in New York or California. But for some reason he just kept falling a bit short. At least once, everyone thought he had clinched the title until a miscalcuation was found.

I first played Ben when he was a 10-year-old Class C player back in 1980. Won his queen for two pieces and still nearly lost the game. I managed to beat him twice within the next year, but since then the record is 14-2 in his favor. And I ain't talking 2 victories on my part.
