Eyal: Tiviakov dosen't play only Scandinavian (that is, in reply to 1.e4) btw. He used to play only Sicilian, and since he took up Scandinavian in 2005 he has played about an equal number of games in each.

Oct-23-09   returnoftheking: Hmm..whatever he will chose at corus, I hope he will try to win some games as well. As a former world youth champion and european champion he has reasons to believe in himself.

HeMateMe: Only one decisive game, a bit too quiet. I always hope the GMs have worked out at least one or two TNs for each tournament, something new to spring on people, at these high profile events. Hopefully, that would represent a full point.

Stonehenge: Judit's 15...Ng7 from yesterday was a TN.
Oct-24-09   siamesedream: What a game Polgar - Ivanchuk!

achieve: I still don't see a way through here for White though, contrary to several comments at playchess.

Stonehenge: I don't see it either, he has 54...Bd8+ now, Ah, draw indeed.
Oct-24-09   siamesedream: Congratulations to GM Sergei Tiviakov for winning the tournament.

I wonder how would the last Dutch Championships end if he wouldn't resign from playing.

plang: I can't think of another tournament where there was only one decisive game.

Of course, only ten games...

  HeMateMe: <Stonehenge>

It seems hard to believe such a strong player could drop a piece in the middle game, maybe a bit of rust?

BTW, how are the druids? I visited Stonehenge a few years back, it was those little druid dudes that built you?

Oct-24-09   returnoftheking: Quite a good performance for Giri when you consider this is his first tournament on this level. He didn't strain himself and appears to have made the smallest number of moves during the tournament as well.

Another young player doing well, it's only a matter of time now before the high priest of Carlsen will start working on this new "threat";)

Oct-24-09   returnoftheking: <plang> The openings chosen may have to do with it as well. No Kings Indian or Grunfeld, and the only sicilian played is the one game that wasn't drawn. I haven't looked at many games but maybe the players were not too ambitious in the openings. Then it's hard to win if you are roughly equal in playing strength.

Stonehenge: <HeHateMe> Sorry, I have no clue about what game you are talking.

<druids> Well, sometimes I feel like the little druid dudes built me. But for that I have my medication :)

Oct-24-09   Phoenix: I didn't think there'd be a weirder crosstable than Nanjing of this year, but this one comes close.

The future of classical chess? I sympathize with whoever put up the money for the 'Crown' group.

Oct-24-09   returnoftheking: Lighten up:)
It's just the format and the players.

Here we had
1 inexperienced new player, prolly happy to draw against the big boys 2 someone who has been somewhat out of the running trying for a cautious comeback 3 strong player who is unfortunately something of a draw master 4 one GM that plays so often that you just cannot expect him to play his A game all the time.

Throw in an Aronian, Topalov or Carlsen and you'd get an entirely different tournament.

Oct-24-09   returnoftheking: p.s. the sponsor, Unive, is an insurance company without "winstoogmerk" as they say.. They are not trying to make a profit, ande some draws resulting in less media attention won't bother them too much, I hope.
Oct-25-09   Blunderdome: Total moves (moves per game):
Tiviakov 416 (69.3)
Ivanchuk 345 (57.5)
Polgar 249 (41.5)
Giri 210 (35)

It's a pity, really - they almost managed to achieve perfect symmetry like group B in Dortmund 2004 (http://p6hq8w.bay.livefilestore.com...), only Tiviakov spoiled it by that stupid win over Polgar.

Incidentally, Tiviakov is one of the only grandmasters who plays more than Ivanchuk.
