Oct-18-09   kramputz: <Oct-18-09 Stonehenge: Does anybody know the opening Friedel is playing?

Vedder-Friedel

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 b5>
4....b5 is a stupid move; black must play 4....d5 first 5.exd5 and now black can play 5....b5 if 6.Bxb5 Qxd5 is the Ulvestad variation. After 4...b5 white can play 5.Bxf7+ and move the bishop back to b3.

virginmind: <kramputz>...or even 5.Nxf7 and after the queen moves, first retreat the bishop to b3 and then of course after black rook moves to g8, retreat also the knight to g5. yeah, i wonder what friedel had in mind with that 4...b5 - well, i guess he can say anyway: what, i've won, didn't i? :)

Oct-18-09   Prugno: I believe they were playing quickly in the opening and it was just a relay error by the Toma board: play probably went 4... d5 5. exd5 b5!? 6. Bxb5 (6. Bf1 is the main line).

Otherwise I refuse to believe both players avoided the sequence 4... b5 5. Bxb5 d5?? 6. Bxc6+ 1-0...

Oct-19-09   valleyman: You can download the crown group games from http://www.univechess.nl/.

Polgar - Tiviakov was a Qd6 Scandinavian where Judit had a small plus the whole game but was unable to convert it into a win. Giri - Ivanchuk was a quick 22 moves draw in the Ragozin variation of the Queen's gambit.

Oct-19-09   walker: both games are drawish
Oct-19-09   Octavia: nice to see Judith again! She could take inspiration from Nigel to get back to her best once again - now that her kids must be nurcery/school age.

<Anand and Topalov will meet in Bulgaria's capital city Sofia on April 2010. Good for Vesselin!> Do you mean he's lucky cause his gov put up the prize money or brave cause he's challenging Anand the greatest? :)
