Oct-20-09  Knight13: <Bdellovibrio: <Silly statement;everything depends on the position. Chess is 90% tactics. I can tell, you have a lot more to learn.> Obviously you're right that positional play depends on tactical vision, but consider also that without an understanding of positional factors, tactical vision is as worthless as a horse-cart without a driver. Tactics and positional understanding are inseperably interdependent.> Yes, obviously that jackass does not know that what I meant was I love positional chess far more than tactical chess. Funny that he decided to dogmatically interpret my somewhat vague statement in his own way and then spit on me with his elitist statements.

If he knew any better he would've knew the quote "chess is 99% tactics" and even "chess is not 99% tactics; it is 99% calculation."

Your "Tactics and positional understanding are inseperably interdependent" needs to be in a famous quote book.

Oct-20-09  Bdellovibrio: <Your "Tactics and positional understanding are inseperably interdependent" needs to be in a famous quote book.> Let's hope not! It's an aesthetic nighmare.
Oct-21-09  kurtrichards: It was all draw in the first half. Time to switch to "win mood" in the second half, Ivanchuk. Come on!
Oct-21-09  watermate: < PhilFeeley: Tiviakov-Ivanchuk: draw in 146 moves! Perhaps they ran out of time... >

They were getting close to the 50 move draw limit whice would have occued on move 159.

Oct-21-09  14DogKnight: <HeMateMe: Perhaps--but wouldn't it make REAL news when a woman got the full gm title? There are only a few who have it. I think Susan and Judit Polgar, kosteniuk, humpy, maybe a few asian champions, like Maya, Nona, one or two of the oriental world champions. Is Pia Cramling a holder of the mens GM title?>

<PhilFeeley: <HeMateMe: Is Pia Cramling a holder of the mens GM title> Yes, and you forgot Hou Yifan.>

I think HeHateMe considers Hou Yifan one of the "oriental world champions". Never mind that these "oriental" champions are also from ASIA. lol

I wonder, are any African champions playing or any negros?

HeMateMe: Bit of a mix there, I was thinking china=asia, as I already had mentioned russian and central asian champions.

Yifan already has the men's GM title? Thats amazing, pretty much on a par with Judit Polgar. The Chinese women are quietly moving into first place in womens chess.

Octavia: <The Chinese women are quietly moving into first place in womens chess.> They've arrived there a few years ago ! ... won the Olympiad & the individual world championship.

Every other country in the world concentrates on getting the men to be the best players. China was very clever, when it became interested in Western chess: Their women got to be good first, since it was easier! The men are getting there, 2, but it takes longer.

I've often thought that a small country like Scotland, Iceland or one of the baltic countries could easily get to the top in women's chess, since they only need to train 4 youngsters...

Oct-22-09  Isbjorn: It looks like the first win is coming up. AFAICT, Tiviakov has played beautifully against Polgar, who will soon (it's move 46 when I write this) be down a whole rook.

In fact, it was finding mate-in-three.

<yes dude he did mean judit> Did you mean Judit?

Oct-23-09  vonKrolock: <siamesedream> : "Two chess lovers of different generations: Giri and Ivanchuk trying to solve a mate-in-three problem"

Not sure yet about some pieces behind the black K, or if there's something in b2 or not, but looks roughly like this at a quick glance

Oct-23-09  vonKrolock: Yes, it works... Variety seems still modest for the employed material - and there're duals too, for instance in threat-line...
Oct-23-09  vonKrolock: Giri vs Polgar - after 29.Qe2 now the weakness of P b2 balance the chronic of P d7, but Pc4 is a new factor...
Oct-23-09  returnoftheking: Why is Tiviakov so adept at playing the Scandinavian ? Has he ever made any comments on it? Today he is trying to exchange all pieces while Ivanchuk is trying to prevent that from happening.Sort of funny.
