Eyal: <this is just the beginning for this very young team >

Actually, they've already been together for quite a while...

Oct-30-09  jon01: Yeah, Jon Ludvig Hammer showed everyone the reason why Carlsen should play next year. Norway is getting stronger!
Oct-30-09  AuN1: russia got hosed -_-
Oct-30-09  returnoftheking: <zarg: Hmm.. Topalov has not been playing the final 3 rounds.

Perhaps afraid of losing his 1st spot on the LIVE list??!>

< Topalov didn't play because he had an engagement in Bulgaria to receive some sort of award. It was known before the championship started that he would not play the last 3 rounds.> Hmm. yes. Maybe the live ratings mean more to the fans than to the players? Or maybe not. So Topalov really had other engagements. What was Carlsen's excuse again?

swordfish: Cok tebrikler, Azerbaijan! Clutch victory by Gashimov in that r & p ending. Spain's draw with Russia helped too. Well-earned win in a very tough tournament. Looking forward to the world teams in January--that may be even more interesting!
Oct-30-09  hand banana: carlsen's excuse was that kasparov hates kramnik and had to make sure he prepares magnus to beat kramnik at all costs.

Not my fault that Stellwagen blundered.

Kinghunt: So how many rating points does Hammer gain from his outstanding performance?
Oct-30-09  walker: <muradov> I would have been the happiest non-Azer of this Azeris victory over the Russians if it was fair. For God sake - go and see the last several moves of that game. Pure fraud. The Royal game suffered the biggest disgrace in recent years. There was a saying - no free lunch or it was no free blunder?
Oct-30-09  kurtrichards: <This tournament was SO sick...:-)> Come on, Natalia. Russia cannot win them all.
Oct-30-09  Kaspablanca: Natalia, chill out, Russia women team won.

HeMateMe: What happened to England? Time to bring Keene, Nunn, out of retirement?
Oct-30-09  kurtrichards: Congratulations to Team Azerbaijan for winning the 2009 European Team Championships!
Oct-30-09  returnoftheking: <zarg> I don't mind- I am not rooting for the dutch team. I did like the Russians though, with Svidler and Morozevich at their best, so maybe Stellwagen losing is the reason of my post after all?;) But seriously; it was more about my Volo post and Rogge's reaction. Why does he insinuate things about Topa, while condemning it when it comes to C. Both should be okay;-)
Oct-31-09  slomarko: does anybody have the names of all individual medal winners?
Oct-31-09  kurtrichards: Gashimov, Vugar (2740) vs. Stellwagen, Daniel (2630) rd. 9

70. ... Rf4 According to an analysis, Stellwagen should have move the rook to e4, to keep the white king on the f-file, or to b4 or c4 to give checks from the side, or to h1 or h2 to give checks from a sufficient distance. 71. Ke6 h4
72. f7 Kg6
73. f8q Rxf8
74. Rxf8 Kg5
75. Ke5
1-0

This Stellwagen's loss proved to be the much needed point to win the gold and the European Team Championship 2009 for team Azerbaijan.

In fairness, Stellwagen played all he could to draw the game but succumbed to pressure of any kind thus committing maybe the blunder of his life... I don't think there was an intentional throwing away of the game in Azerbaijan favor to the detriment of some other team particularly Russia.

Team Azerbaijan deserved to be 2009 ETC champion. Conratulations! Congratulations, too, to all participating teams.

Oct-31-09  slomarko: i can't believe he played 70...Rf4, it looks like a horrible move to me immediately.
Oct-31-09  Moonstone: Congratulations Team Azerbaijan!!!
Oct-31-09  Hovik2009: Congratulations Azerbaijan for winning her first team gold medal after independence! piruzzi bayramli var!

it looks like I am the only Armenian to congrat Azerbaijan for winning this event!, But a friendly! advice, don't get too overconfident and proud, that won't do any good to you in the future team events, beside remember on the path to victory only taem you lost to were your good neighbor Armenia!

ROFLMAO

Oct-31-09  redwhitechess: I couldn't find any good Kosteniuk photos in the official website.
Oct-31-09  muradov: <slomarko: does anybody have the names of all individual medal winners?

Gashimov and Mamedyarov won gold in 2nd and 4th board, consecutively. I don't know the full list, couldn't find it on the official page either..

Oct-31-09  e5d5UziGalil: <Time to bring Keene, Nunn, out of retirement?>

Leave them alone in their happy, retired lives, they got better things to do than getting active with full time-professional OTB games. Their participation will not make a dent in this Youthful generation of chess.

Oct-31-09  slomarko: <Gashimov and Mamedyarov won gold in 2nd and 4th board, consecutively. I don't know the full list, couldn't find it on the official page either..> This just shows how much the chess world is broken, they give medals for individual results on tables and it's impossible to find these results anywhere.
