Feb-04-10  ROADDOG: <whiteshark: Third game is an Armageddon game...> Yes, and just won by Adams. So he'll face Vallejo-Pons for the Championship.

whiteshark: So Adams has won the 1st 10 min game vs Vallejo Pons

from the chat: <(1-0 england....)> :D

Feb-04-10  ROADDOG: Great game by Adams. All he has to do is draw game 2 to win the tournament. If Vallejo-Pons wins game 2, Armageddon again?

amadeus: This livestream.com site works really well. I think we can expect more reliable transmissions from now on.
Feb-04-10  aorist: Adams drew the second game and won the tournament. Congratulations! He needed this.

swordfish: Congrats to Mickey for a hard-earned victory. It is a bit odd though; even as the playoffs, there are still games going on which could result in even more players ending up with 7.5 points in the tourney.
Feb-04-10  siamesedream: Congratulations to Michael Adams.

whiteshark: Not to big efforts from Pons in the 2nd game. In a must win situation he sacrificed a pieces for only two pawns without getting any play.

Well congrats to Adams for winning 1st price, though (GBP 15,000).

Feb-04-10  shalgo: <Congrats to Mickey for a hard-earned victory. It is a bit odd though; even as the playoffs, there are still games going on which could result in even more players ending up with 7.5 points in the tourney.>

The organizers calculated in advance that none of the potential winners of those games could end up among the top four TPRs and therefore be part of the playoff.

It does seem a bit unfair that TPR is the only factor that decides who makes the playoff when some players (Gustafsson) had 6 whites out of 10 games while others (Kamsky) had only 4.

Feb-04-10  sakii: how do chess players make money ?
hotel accommodation was 1000 pounds and they had to finish among top 10 to get that amount in prize.

parmetd: sakii: The top players are generally given free entry and free hotel plus paid appearance fees.

But to answer your question, most chess players out of the top100 barely make minimum wage when all is said and done. They also make most of their money from teaching and not prize money or appearance fees.

Feb-04-10  turbo231: The top woman recieved 8,000 pounds runnerup 3,000. It's a shame that the greatest game that the world has ever known doesn't pay what it should.

waustad: One thing I like about this tournament is that so many families participate. Looking through the player lists in the other sections, one sees a lot of last names of players in the pro section. Ana Cramling Bellon even got a win. I think she's 7. I also see several Norwegians named Carlsen and Agdestein. Last year they had a lot of pictures of parents with their kids there. It sounds like a nice way to spend a week during the Winter.

dx9293: Congrats to Gata Kamsky and Alex Lenderman for finishing tied for the top spot with 7.5/10.

This is Alex's 5th (!) GM norm, achieved with a TPR of 2652. His "live" FIDE rating should be about 2601 now (2560 + 18 over three already rated events, +10 more from the Golden State Open which hasn't been rated yet, +13.3 from Gibraltar). When is FIDE finally going to give him his GM title?

Feb-04-10  indianchessupdates: .

There was a tie for first place with 9 players with 7.5/10 points. The top four players on tie-break played off in a knockout.

Feb-08-10  Ezzy: Congrats to my fellow countrymam 'Mickey' Adams for winning Gibralter 2010. He han't been winning much for a while and is a good tonic for the new year ahead. He must have desperately wanted the number 1 British spot back.
