Feb-20-10  anandrulez: Topalov luck vs these super GM's shudnt be underestimated ! He is getting lucky but the real talent is that he can win a super gm with complicating positions .
Feb-20-10  abscissa: Good question, badest! Btw, I totally agree with Raisin Death Ray and agree with anandrulez.

parmetd: totally agree frogbert. I just lost a drawn endgame with an IM today cause I had less than 7 seconds on my clock with no delay or increment.
Feb-20-10  keithbc: The world needs a Topalov just as it needed a Kasparov and a Fischer and a Tal. He, more than any modern player, is a true fighter and complicates games and resists dry / short draws. It was such a disappointment when he lost against Kramnik.
Feb-20-10  mynameisrandy: I wish Tal was still alive, and still young, and still a genius.

He was the best one. A gentleman and a scoundrel, a fighter on the board who did not carry that aggression with him when he left the squares.

Later gator. You were the best.

Feb-20-10  znsprdx: <Bobwhoosta:> As support for your [page 17] defense of the absolute necessity to employ increments of at least 5 seconds (...30 is a bit much...) look at the position after ...28.Nxd3 BUT for the sake of argument let us presume that White's Queen is on g6 and that Black also is in 'zeitnot' hence moves 29.Rh5??(attacking Knight) missing what looms as a forced Philidor (smothered) mate (which I fantasized during actual game) <

> ...29.Qb6+ 30.Kh1 Nf2+ 31. Kg1 Nh3+(discovered & double check)32.Kh1 and Black's flag falls playing ...32. Qg1+ (point) It is lunacy for White to claim a win on time since 33.Nx[Q]g1 Nf2#

From my Coffeehouse Blitz days I think there is an exception if delivering mate on the move - which further establishes the absurdity of the concept - why allow for this which acknowledges the anomaly? At worst at least call it a draw because in effect we are dealing with a variation of Zeno's Paradox [znsprdx] :)

Feb-20-10  randzo: Gashimov-Topalov looked sharp from the opening but after 11.O-0 Black can be OK
Feb-20-10  muradov: <Raisin Death Ray>

If you don't know who Gashimov is and what he's doing in Linares, maybe you need to update that heavy piece on your shoulders ;)

Feb-20-10  muradov: <znsprdx> 10. Qg3 was played. And this looks to be a novelty by Gashimov.

Bobwhoosta: Gashimov's position looks great against Topa. He's got the two bishops, black has weak dark squares, he's about to regain his pawn, AND black is going to have trouble continuing development.

We'll see what all of this comes to though... as far as it looks to me, huge advantage to white.

  Bobwhoosta: <Huge Advantage>

Alright, so I missed the very simple 23...e5.

White has a slight advantage.

PhilFeeley: Does anyone believe 22. Qc3 by Aronian?
Feb-20-10  zealouspawn: I'm thinking its a transmission error, or he would have resigned by now
Feb-20-10  Pencho: It's a transmission error, u can check the real position at chessbomb.com

PhilFeeley: Even chessok.com has the error.
Feb-20-10  Jim Bartle: Seems like a fairly weak move.
Feb-20-10  ROADDOG: Aronian vs Vallejo-Pons

Vallejo-Pons just played 28...b4 and a Rybka advantage of -1.12, but he is playing Aronian...

Feb-20-10  csmath: <Gashimov's position looks great against Topa.>

He really has nothing but a bishop pair and that is on mercy of Topalov as he can exchange them any time. In fact black has very pretty position but impossible to improve.

  Bobwhoosta: <csmath>

Yes, a couple of moves have clarified that for me. Seems headed for a draw...

Feb-20-10  csmath: Not so fast, I think Topa will try to improve his position although it is hard to see how.
Feb-20-10  noiselesion: Time trouble or not, only good players get lucky.
Feb-20-10  ivan999: gashimov made time control with 9 secs on his clock.
Feb-20-10  csmath: Gashimov holds on a string but the string is strong. Any exchange and he will bring home a half a point which is what he wants apparently now.
Feb-20-10  ivan999: gashimov's pawn on a5 is not so hot, but he should be able to hold i think.
Feb-20-10  orio24: Could somebody provide the positions, please?
Thanks.
