  PhilFeeley: Sokolov-Caruana

Black actually looks pretty desperate:

Mar-12-10  slomarko: interesting he confirmed he will run for FIDE president.
Mar-12-10  Refused: ok Gustafsson is now up an exchange. Let's see how he converts it.
Mar-12-10  Refused: And no less than 3 connected passed pawns for Evdokimov, uff somehow that position looked better some moves ago.
Mar-12-10  Kazzak: @PhilFeeley - yes, it's quite a game, Caruana's. He had the early initiative, then it passed to Sokolov, before Caruana allowed the pawn advance. He should have captured exf5, instead of taking the Knight. Sokolov should be able to survive the King-hunt Caruana will embark upon.

PhilFeeley: <Kazzak> Do you think it's a draw now? Can Caruana survive?
Mar-12-10  Kazzak: No, it was over for him when he failed to take the f-pawn.

Follow the game from the beginning, and you'll recognize my initial description of the initiative being exchanged, which I wrote as the middle game got going.

PhilFeeley: Bacrot and Cheparinov are having a terrible tournament so far. They'll have to win most of the rest of their games to get anywhere near the top.

Mar-12-10  kingsindian2006: efmienkooooo, beer does a body good!!!!...(im sure it was harder stuff though for him) Love how this guy gets booted for being drunk then comes back to kick some butt...gotta love it!
Mar-13-10  Ezzy: <kingsindian2006:> Are you thinking of the French player Tkachiev? I can't recall Efimenko being drunk. He probably got drunk when Nigel Short beat him in their match last year, but not at the board I don't think. :-)
Mar-13-10  kingsindian2006: <ezzy> maybe i been drinking to much, you might be correct ...lol

PhilFeeley: Anybody watching the webcast today? They're supposed to start in about half an hour, but I don't see anyone there yet.

PhilFeeley: Bologan's playing a King's Indian again, but the king side pawn storm seems to be going to his opponent.
Mar-15-10  ROADDOG: Nepo beat Jobava 1-0 Congrats to Ian
Mar-15-10  Illogic: Wow Nepo was not settling for a draw in this one. Credit to Jobava also. 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. f3!? Qb6!? 4. a4!? e5!? and the position quickly became very sharp.
Mar-15-10  redwhitechess: Tension tonight :

Pick your winner now. ;)

Mar-15-10  redwhitechess: <During the Olympics in Varna 1962, in one occasion Tal asked Fischer: “Bobby, according to you, who is the best player in the world in this moment…?” and when he saw a perplexed expression on Bobby’s face he quickly added: “…I mean after you, of course.” Turned calm, Fischer started to fix Tal for a couple of moments and then said:” You are not so bad either.” >

PhilFeeley: It looks like Bacrot has withdrawn. He was doing very poorly.

achieve: <Bacrot> didn't do poorly IMO, just drew all of his games but one; no loss... Probably sick and low on energy.

Robin01: I believe the games should have started. Perhaps a lot of draws now on those top boards, as players jockey for position.

PhilFeeley: <Robin01> It does indeed look like a lot of short draws. Perhaps folks are tired. I would think trying to catch the leader and 20K would be enough incentive.
Mar-17-10  jon01: OK, let's discuss the tie-break rules. Rapid play-off matches?

PhilFeeley: It should be an interesting last round. I hope many fight for a win to make it into the lead. I'm rooting for Ian.
