PhilFeeley: The top board game looks like a good struggle. I wonder if they will agree to a draw at a crucial moment:

Nepomniachtchi - Akopian
after black's 23...Bf8

Mar-17-10  esticles: Boards 2 and 3 are also very exciting! Khismatullin gave up the exchange for a powerful a-pawn, and Timofeev just sacked a knight!
Mar-17-10  jon01: Lysyj-Efimenko was a short draw, they probably wanted to guarantee their World Cup tickets.
Mar-17-10  jon01: Timofeev loves these connected passed pawns and doesn't hesitate to sacrifice a little material, just like in A Timofeev vs D Khismatullin, 2009
Mar-17-10  jon01: I really like Nepomniachtchi's position and Akopian is also low on time.

vonKrolock: Kid's stuff - another massacre. Worth a Fischer or Kasparov was his performance in the whole, by the way. Rating list is non-sense today
Mar-17-10  jon01: The results show that Nepo, Timofeev and Almasi won their last games.

Ian Nepomniachtchi is European Champion 2010!

percyblakeney: Excellent result by Nepomniachtchi, going +7 in 11 rounds with wins against players like Akopian, Jobava and Inarkiev.
Mar-17-10  jon01: I think GM Jobava deserved the title, he also beat Khismatullin in a really amusing game today, but ended up on 8,5 points together with Timofeev.

Nepo scored more points and won against Jobava, so I think he deserved it...

Mar-17-10  frogbert: really exciting last round today!
Mar-17-10  frogbert: <Rating list is non-sense today>

no it isn't, but seemingly the way you interpret it is. :o)

Mar-17-10  frogbert: <Probably a lot of draws (short ones) again today.>

four of the top 5 boards were hardfought, decisive games. we really can't complain about the leading players' fighting attitude today.

percyblakeney: In a couple of years Cheparinov has fallen from the top 20 (January 2008) to outside the top 100 (after this tournament).

percyblakeney: Guseinov has dropped points even quicker, from 2667 in September to below 2600 today.
Mar-17-10  jon01: <In a couple of years Cheparinov has fallen from the top 20 (January 2008) to outside the top 100 (after this tournament).>

Cheparinov can't play, otherwise he will reveal Topalov's secrets. I'm sure he will regain back to 2700 after the world championship match.

percyblakeney: Nepomniachtchi isn't too far from 2700 now, but he will need another good result to reach it. He gained almost 30 points here and should have 16 left to 2700.
Mar-17-10  kingsindian2006: i thought this would be the tourney giri shines and takes a big step forward.. i wonder if he is ill?
Mar-17-10  esticles: With 10 players having 8 points and above, the remaining 12 World Cup spots will be decided tomorrow between the 30 players at 7.5. I'm guessing the bottom 12 on tiebreaks will be paired to reduce the field to 24, and then the 24 will be paired up to get to 12. We'll have to find out tomorrow though!
Mar-17-10  evlozare: a disappointing tournament result for fabiano caruana, one of the 'rising stars' player on august2010. he ended up 124th place.
