Apr-08-10  Troller: Earlier, Nepom won yet another game, this time as Black against Kovchan. He has been playing on a very consistent high level lately and should break the 2700 barrier pretty soon if he keeps it up.

  e4ia: re; Ponomariov vs Khenkin;

typical relay delays and sponsor site "down" at this post;

assume Kenkin's greatest win in a dead lost position for Pono after latest moves available at this posting time*

  tamar: Looks like the site just forgot to post the results, which are up now without any further moves.

Pono lost, while Belov won, and Sjugirov settled for a draw.

Apr-09-10  siamesedream: Top pairings today:

Nepomniachtchi - Ponomariov
Gelfand - Ivanchuk
Karjakin - Svidler
Caruana - Movsesian.

Apr-09-10  Troller: <Pogonina> <"...in the men's section there are sixteen 2700+ players, that's about 50 percent of all grandmasters of that caliber in the world. Their games are something to be considered.">

This tournament is in fact ridiculously strong; the Tomsk-400 team has Timofeev only as a reserve player, yet they are located in the lower half of the field. No less than 3 teams are sporting rating averages of 2700+ for the first six boards.

Does anyone know how the top players decide their teams for the Europe Cup? Most of these guys are also playing in the Bundesliga (and probably other leagues as well).

Apr-09-10  slomarko: <Does anyone know how the top players decide their teams for the Europe Cup? Most of these guys are also playing in the Bundesliga (and probably other leagues as well).> how do you mean "how"? whoever pays them more, isn't that obvious?
Apr-09-10  schroedingers cat: Grischuk seems to be only a shadow of himself... Such a shame to see such a player showing bad form.
Apr-10-10  kurtrichards: IM Maxim Matlakov RUS 2600 (M.Chigorin Chess Club) v. GM Pavel Elijanov UKR 2736 (Economist-SGSEU-1)

Apr-10-10  frogbert: anybody who knows why eljanov was defeated yesterday? did he oversleep? didn't he show up?

the result is written as a w.o. defeat on the official site, so i haven't rated his game ...

Apr-10-10  DCP23: <frogbert: anybody who knows why eljanov was defeated yesterday? did he oversleep? didn't he show up?>

Eljanov departed from Dagomys to Germany in order to play in the Bundesliga early in the morning, as was agreed upon. The team captain however was late to file the changed roster, and so Eljanov was included by the arbiters as a player for this round. Thus the match started with his technical loss.

Apr-10-10  frogbert: dcp23, thanks. absolutely nothing to blame eljanov for, in other words.

  Dr. Funkenstein: I agree that the skill level on display here is ridiculous, but it would be nice if they were playing by the Sofia rules as a lot of the top games are just quick draws (under 20-25 moves).

Apr-11-10  Kazzak: Do I show a lack of grace in proposing that Kosteniuk should hit the chess books and fix her game?
Apr-11-10  Kazzak: The individual performance ratings are a little weird here. Due to the team play, the strongest players had stronger opposition. The player on top of the men's performance ranking had significantly weaker opposition than Ivanchuk, for instance.

1. Riazantsev - avg. opposition 2587
22. Nepomnachtchi - 2666
24. Gelfand - 2717

Grischuk, Pono, Ivanchuk all had significantly tougher opposition than Riazantsev.

Apr-13-10  SharpAttack: Eljanov - All decisive games! Good going..(Sad, he couldn't win all of them)
