Jul-02-10  Nina Myers: Some have a disposition to believe things without waiting for concrete proof. That's what I call dull!
Jul-02-10  r00ki: Which is stronger on a dual core machine? Firebird or Houdini
Jul-02-10  zanshin: <r00ki: Which is stronger on a dual core machine? Firebird or Houdini>

For single line analysis, I would guess Houdini, but it might depend on the time controls.

Jul-16-10  Sydro: Houdini 1.03 has been released. New features:

Jul-16-10  zanshin: <Sydro: Houdini 1.03 has been released.>

Thanks for the tip. I will try it out.

Jul-17-10  turbo231: me too. Great news for me I now have a 2 core laptop. They had to upgrade the motherboard. It's only a T2450 processor(old laptop that was the max it would take) but I love love love it. I'm multitasking now!

Time to check the Rybka vs Stockfish match. Rybka defeated Houdini in the first match 26.5-21.5. That was the Houdini 1.02 engine.

Jul-17-10  turbo231: After 31 of 48 games Rybka4 is beating Stockfish 1.8: 17.5-13.5.
Jul-17-10  turbo231: Dowloaded houdini 1.03a played it against houdini 1.02 the former is stronger. In fact I played them for 15 games houdini 1.02 didn't win a single game.

I think houdini will keep getting stronger until rybka wont stand a chance. Rybka improves once every 2 or 3 years, where as houdini improves much sooner, what is it once a month?

grasser: When I run Rybka 4, browsing other pages is difficult. Pages, Java won't load. Videos skip etc.

When I switch to Fritz 12, the problems resolve.

Jul-18-10  KKDEREK: Rybka continue to dominates in classic time control, as it seems .

Smaller time controls is another ball game..Even Shredder gets tougher in smaller ones

Jul-18-10  zanshin: <grasser> Have you tried running Rybka 4 using the Fritz GUI - just to see if it's the engine or something else?

grasser: <zanshin> Yes. I start out loading Fritz 12. When Fritz 12 is thinking everything else runs normal. When I switch to Rybka 4 from within the Fritz 12 Interface, and Rybka 4 is thinking, other stuff does not work well. When it is not thinking, other pages work normally.
Jul-18-10  zanshin: <grasser> That's a puzzle to me. And you're sure you're running the right version of Deep Rybka, ie 64-bit OS running 64-bit version?

grasser: <zanshin> I don't have the Deep version. It seems to be the same as Fritz 12. Both say 239mb when they are loaded.

I have a message into tech support and am awaiting a reply.

Jul-18-10  zanshin: <grasser> Are you using a single or multicore computer?

  grasser: <zanshin> Single.
Jul-19-10  zanshin: <grasser> I think you are doing everything correctly then. Hopefully, chessok will be able to assist you.
Jul-19-10  turbo231: Single core computers are just awful. I just upgraded my laptop computer to a duo core about a week ago and it's very very very nice. The motherboard cost $116.00 and the duo core processor cost $80.

Plus it allows me 4 gigs of memory enough for windows 7. You might not have to change the motherboard but I had to because my laptop is a very cheap one. I bought it used about 7 years ago.

My dream computer is a Microworks Blackhawk or Sager laptop with 3 hard drives 12 gigs of memory, the best i7 processor etc. and optioned out it only costs $10,000! They have a desktop 8 core processor in them water cooled and weigh 13 lbs!

Jul-19-10  turbo231: Rybka4 is killing Stockfish 1.8

24.5 - 15.5 with 8 games to go. I would call that a TKO.

Jul-20-10  turbo231: Arena wont let me play against houdini or stockfish. Any one else having trouble?
Jul-21-10  turbo231: And arena wont allow me to play on ICS with houdini after a few moves I get arena adjudication illegal move and it gives my opponent the game. I played about 6 games.

But it will let me play with Fire 131 and stockfish. I uninstalled then reinstalled houdini didn't help. Then I uninstalled to reinstalled arena didn't help.

I scanned both arena and houdini with malwarebytes antimalware and microsoft essentials no problems. Then I did a full scan with both security systems no problems. All this happened 2 days ago and is still happening. I think arena is associated with rybka some how.

Yesterday I installed Belarc Advisor and when I logged on to ICS today I got a warning for the first time that part of ICS was blocked and did I want to allow the parts that were blocked I choose unblock. I've used ICS hundreds of times so I trusted them. If I get that warning again I'll choose block and see what happens.

Jul-21-10  turbo231: When I log in @ ICS it's with a computer account and most of the time I use FICS as a guest.
Aug-12-10  turbo231: Except for the times I want to play, if I'm feeling it. The best computer seems to be Naum 4.2 it won the first tournament.
