Jul-28-10  zluria: Here's a possible line in the Rodshtein game: 48. ...Rxe6 49. Qxg4+ Kf7 50. Rxe6 Qxe6 51. Qg7+ Ke8 52. Qxh7 and I think White is winning, since Black doesn't seem to have perpetual. The passed h6 pawn should decide.

zarg: <Seems like ancient history now.>

Yeah, that was back at the ice-age, now all that ice is long gone. :)

Thanks!

  zarg: <if Andreikin wins.>

Looks bad for So, don't think he survive this...

Marmot PFL: Bet So can get a draw, with R vs R+N

Kinghunt: So and Giri both losing in the last round, I don't think anyone expected that. This hasn't been a good tournament for either of the rising stars.

Marmot PFL: Maybe he can't, I thought he could if he took the f pawn, but probably i overlooked something.
Jul-28-10  delftfan: Giri made many people happy today by losing..

Jul-28-10  slomarko: <zarg: <if Andreikin wins.> Looks bad for So, don't think he survive this...>

from the series "zarg and his engine". everybody with at least little chess understanding would know this is a very probable draw.

Marmot PFL: So will get the draw anyway, unless he blunders like Taimanov.
Jul-28-10  Layson: It's a little bit dull to see all four joint winners with identical 2-0-7 records. But this is yet another fantastic result for the Vietnamese contingent.

Great results for Nguyen who enjoys a spot out of Le's shadow and Andreikin who's relative anonymity stems from the fact he's Russian like so many others.

I'm excited to see if Vietnam can shape up to not only surprise like at the last Olympiads, but also shock with major upsets.

Marmot PFL: Andreikin should probably have won, but his time was low and So fought hard.

Marmot PFL: 3 joint winners, do they have playoff?
Jul-28-10  Layson: Well, I'll be darned.

That should teach me to assume the result of a game before it's actually over. Scratch my comment on Andreikin then.

Marmot PFL: Thanks for update! That' a nice payoff for better SB tiebreak. i also heard that the winner gets into Corus, can anyone confirm?
Jul-28-10  AuN1: when are they going to announce the participants for corus? anyone been confirmed yet?
Jul-28-10  Blunderdome: Giri, as winner of Corus B, will be invited, and I'd be surprised if he didn't choose to play.

Kramnik has the event listed on his homepage:

http://www.kramnik.com/

Carlsen (the winner!) will also get invited back, and again, I would think he'll play. Anand usually plays and I can't imagine they would forget him.

I would also expect Van Wely and at least two of Tiviakov, Smeets, and Stellwagen. In addition, they usually invite a top English player (Adams or Short) and a top American (Nakamura or Kamsky).

Corus's home page has the dates for the 2011 event up, but I don't see anything about the lineup. There might be something in the news items -- if you can read them.

notyetagm: Wow, how many rating points did <SO> and <GIRI> each lose in this tournament?

Thanks

Jul-29-10  radicalcation: <notyetagm: Wow, how many rating points did <SO> and <GIRI> each lose in this tournament? Thanks>

Giri was -1 and So +0, not really a complete disaster for either one of them, no? Giri lost about 7 and So about 2.

  notyetagm: Go Ngoc!
Jul-29-10  evlozare: gmwes had two wins, two losses and five draws. the leaders nguyen, lagrave and caruana likewise had two wins, seven draws but no losses. the fourth placer, andreikin had only one win, eight draws, no lost game either.

not a bad result for gmwes at all.

Jul-29-10  asianwarrior: Did anybody noticed that there were 31 draws in 45 matches? And the Top 6 were within one point within each other? It seems that the players were almost even in strength.
Jul-29-10  percyblakeney: Caruana won the Armageddon game against MVL and will meet Ngoc Truongson Nguyen in the final.

Peligroso Patzer: I get the impression that in the first rapid game, playing quickly (as conditionsd required) Caruana overlooked 29. ... Qd3! In any case, after that move Nguyen had a strong initiative for the remainder of the game. Caruana was quite fortunate to be able to hold the draw.
