Aug-06-10  goodevans: Wells seems to have emerged from the major complications quite well. Looks as though he'll go a pawn up but the position is complex with chances on both sides.

Adams has a sac on e4 that looks tempting to a patzer like me.

Aug-06-10  goodevans: Well what d'yah know ... he's just played it!

HeMateMe: I didn't see the chess author Gary Lane's name here this year. Guess he was taking one off.
Aug-06-10  I Like Fish: all the same...
he came...
Aug-06-10  KKDEREK: <hedgeh0g: I imagine Mickey is simply out to prove he's capable of winning the British Championship whenever he wants.>

Right on. I'm sure he can go on that forever, year after year, as we saw this year, where he didn't have a single player at least 2600+ to compete against. He and Nigel are far out the rest it seems.

dx9293: I hate to say it, but Mickey probably played because (a) he needs some cash, or more likely (b) he needs some rating points.
Aug-06-10  zoren: A Swiss tournament as a top seed is hardly the place to gain rating points. Basically all professional chess players could need "some cash", but Mickey is likely to be playing for his own pleasure.

dx9293: <zoren> I hope you are right and Mickey did indeed play for his pleasure!

Check It Out: Adam's games in this tourney impressed me; his seemingly simple openings suddenly go very bad for his opponents, all in around 30 moves, against 2500 opposition - amazing!

i agree, not for rating points but for (in order of satisfaction)..

+ own pleasure
+ prestige
+ money

Aug-07-10  eightsquare: how many rounds are there?
Aug-07-10  BobCrisp: 11. It's over.
Aug-07-10  eightsquare: how did Richard pert play 12?

Marmot PFL: Adams did gain quite a few points from this and other events. Up to 2730 now and passed such prominent players as Leko, Movsesian and Nakamura.
Aug-07-10  cade: Richard Pert didn't play 12 games, it's just that his 12 move draw with Houska has been uploaded twice. (So you can also deduct half a point from the score listed here).
Aug-08-10  Don Cossacks: Mickey is back.
Aug-08-10  frogbert: <A Swiss tournament as a top seed is hardly the place to gain rating points.>

that depends to a big part on the specific player in question.

adams has gained 22 points now from events he's had to put up big scores (against relatively weak players) in order to <keep> his rating.

several other elite players are notably better at gaining rating points against 2500-players than against other 2700-players.

btw, the front page is wrong in its intro to this event: adams won with 9/11, but he'd already won after round 10, when he was 8,5/10.

Aug-08-10  Ezzy: Apparently, Adams, Short, McShane and Howell (Britain's top 4) will participate in next years championship! The prize money for first place is being increased from £5,000 to £10,000.

<frogbert: btw, the front page is wrong in its intro to this event: adams won with 9/11,>

btw, Adams won with 9.5/11 :-)

Aug-08-10  frogbert: right you are - and hence he was 9/10 after the penultimate round. i guess i should go to bed now.
Aug-08-10  Ezzy: <frogbert:> For somebody who does a fantastic job maintaining the 'live ratings' list, I feel slightly embarrassed pointing out rare errors of another dedicated chess enthusiast. I know you have a good sense of humour, so I couldn't resist. :-)

MrMelad: If you are wondering, then yes, the Perts are twins.
Aug-09-10  nigelsnoru: Folks, it's called bottom feeding. Everyone is about 5 zillion rating points below Adams. I do not believe invitations should be extended to or accepted by someone with such an enormous rating gap. Let Micky play with someone his own size and see if the results are any different. For now, I remain unimpressed, to put it mildly.

pawn to QB4: Of course, during all those years when neither Adams or Short participated, people put the opposite whine: why don't the top guys support their national championship and doesn't their non-appearance devalue the title? I imagine the other people were keen to chance their arm against him: for me, Wells in particular came out with great credit.

GrahamClayton: The 21 year gap between Adam's first British championship in 1989 and his third title in 2010 is a record. It was also Adam's first appearance in the British championship after winning the title for a second time in 1997.

Interesting that the Pert brothers finished 2nd and 3rd. When was the last time two brothers finished in the major placings in a national championship tournament? The Johner brothers in Switzerland come to mind.
