BTW. It would be nice to see 2012 WCh Match: Anand - Carlsen!

First off, that one 4 game playoff is hardly enough to draw conclusions. Maybe Nakamura actually is better, but we have yet to see enough play between the two of them to conclude that for sure. Second, one minute a move is hardly blitz. Third, it was Nakamura's 10...Bg4 that got the world team into trouble so early. Just saying...

It wouldn't make any difference. The problem here was that the GMs all had different plans and when the fans picked one move from one plan and one from another, everything just fell apart. Having white or black didn't matter. For it to be a competitive game, there would need to be a way to ensure that the GMs cooperate and reinforce each other rather than competing for their move to be chosen. But that would entail far slower time controls and it would start to resemble a correspondence chess game. This was never intended to be anything more than a publicity stunt.

|Sep-10-10|| ||lilfoohk: Naka spoiled the whoel thing, and the others were too weak so depend on him.|
|Sep-10-10|| ||Eric Schiller: Nakamura's Qd7 instead of cxd5 would have kept them in the game. Kasparov said his rare ...c6 was okay. He was not to blame. Judit's ...e5 was more significant and Kasparov really didn't like it. Naka wanted the normal ...a6.|
|Sep-11-10|| ||eightsquare: Magnus is really getting better and better. It will be really nice to see the 2012 world championship to be Anand-Carlsen. I still think Anand will win somehow though. I agree with Kasparov. cxd5 looked ugly and e5 wasn't really the best.|
|Sep-11-10|| ||vonKrolock: <Judit's ...e5 was more significant and Kasparov really didn't like it. Naka wanted the normal ...a6> Maxime also picked 7...a7-a6. The choice of the seventh move came as a surprise. Even so - just for the record: in the prototypical game Geller vs Lombardy, 1967 black was not terminated in the same raw fashion|
|Sep-11-10|| ||moronovich: <raw fashion> Lol !|
|Sep-11-10|| ||izimbra: Were the 3 GM's even allowed to watch the World Team voting as it was happening? If not, then the actual move played was often a surprise to them in the same way that the opponents move is a surprise. So they get one surprise, 60 seconds to consider as Magnus plays - possibly another surprise - and then they get to suggest a move again without knowing whether or not it will be played. At the very least, that format might take some adjusting to. I'd rate that + 90 seconds as more of a handicap than just playing at 60 sec/move as Magnus did.|
|Sep-11-10|| ||Matsumoto: When is Carlsen's next match?|
|Sep-13-10|| ||frogbert: i thought the point of these matches indeed was to have the <public> choose the moves, among reasonable alternatives. the point isn't to have the gm play 3 other gms, is it?|
anyway, this was mostly a publicity stunt - pay little attention to the outcome. :o)

RAW WORLD CHESS CHALLENGE IN NEW YORK
In May I visited New York for the first time, and I sure didn´t mind going back for the Raw World Chess Challenge. It is an amazing city and the view from the Cooper Square hotel where we´re staying, is remarkable. In the RAW World Chess Challenge taking place at the rooftop of the hotel, the three strong Grandmasters H.Nakamura, M. Vachier Lagrave and J. Polgar made candidate moves and via internet the world made the choice. It was quite interesting but after the world recaptured with the c-pawn on d5 in the KID variation, I had a comfortable game. Later when I went for the flashy Nb6 variation, g4 would have been a safer option but it was enough to secure victory after 40+ moves and 2.5 hours play. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. The spectacular surroundings, Garry Kasparov and Maurice Ashley live comments, Liv Tyler attending the closing ceremony and the huge international press coverage made if the most impressive chess event I´ve attended. G-star: Thank you very much for organizing this event! Today I enjoy following the US Open on TV but will do some sightseeing in the coming days before the Fashion week G-star event on September 14th and the Arctic Securities Simul on the 15th. Magnus Carlsen, New York, September 11th, 2010
