May-19-11  Refused: But not that easy to play for a win imho

White will have an active king in the occuring endgame but he will also suffer from a worse pawn structure after

19.Kc3 fxg2
20.Bxg2

May-19-11  jair: Gris looking for his TT fix. What do you think is the correct way to play against an opponents time trouble when the opponent is a better blitz player? (Not applicable to Gelfand here).
May-19-11  Refused: I don't see Grischuk approaching time trouble this game.

No complicated lines to calculate.

May-19-11  Refused: hum 20...Rg4 played, I wonder if 21.Rd1 works :)

Looks interesting for sure

May-19-11  Refused: on a second thought 21.Bd5 looks more sensitive, since 21.Rd1 Be6 was not what I was looking for

Mozart72: Grischuk has a 56.25% probability that his King will be threatend, so does Gelfand.

  Mozart72: Grischuk's King Safety: 43.75% vs Gelfand's King safety 43.75%
May-19-11  Refused: hum 24.Rxc1 looks inaccurate, I think 24.Kxc1 would have been better

Mozart72: <queenforteopawns> They would have a King Safety of 31.25% each.

Mozart72: <queenfortwopawns> I mean in the actual position without Bishops and Rooks.
May-19-11  kia0708: are you guys using computers to analyse it or what

Mozart72: <kia0708> Not in my case.
May-19-11  Refused: Nope, no chess software installed on this machine
May-19-11  Refused: hum, I guess, 29.Kb4 now for grischuk, trying to cut the black king off from c7

and then b6 a6 a7

might become a threat.

May-19-11  Refused: Refused: 29.b6!?
Does this work?

I thought 29...axb6 30.a6 Kc7
and Black is alright?

OR did I miss something?

Ah ok,
29...axb6
30.a6 Kc7
31.Ra1
and black is in trouble.

ok, so
29...axb6
30.a6 Bc8
should hold I think

Mozart72: Grischuk: 31.25% King Safety vs Gelfand: 25% King Safty
May-19-11  Hovik2009: Today is draw as usual when Sasha plays white, tomorrow Gandalf in white will wave his stalk in the most magical opening and all poker dreams of Sasha will turn nightmare!
May-19-11  Refused: Gelfand is not on the safe side yet.

I think with very very accurate play Grischuk might win this.

e.g.

The position after

41.Rxg7 Rf4 42.Rg5 h4 43.Rh5 Kxa5
is listed as a win in the nalimov tablebase.

But the draw-range is quite big, no doubt about it.

May-19-11  APatzer: did grischuk propose an early draw that gelfand refuse ? may be gris wanted to play since gelfand is a 'weaker' player compared to aronian & kramkick.
May-19-11  Hovik2009: <did grischuk propose an early draw that gelfand refuse ? may be gris wanted to play since gelfand is a 'weaker' player compared to aronian & kramkick.>

weaker player is little undermining statment, I have seen many games(at least 5-6 or more) where Gelfand toasted Aronian and Kramnik

May-19-11  Refused: The longer I look at the position, the deeper my suspicion grows, that Gelfand is just lost after 42.Rg5

Black's king is too far away and the white monarch will be there to assist his rook and passed pawn in no time.

May-19-11  Refused: 42. Rg6+ is the wrong path, now it's a draw.

42. Rg5 was winnig

May-19-11  Hovik2009: after white a-pawn falls, this is stock draw, black king hides behind white king preventing side checks
May-19-11  Refused: Hovik, now it is, but check out the lines after 42.Rg5!

Black would be dead lost then.

White simply plays Rh5 Ke6 etc. afterwards

42.Rg6+ spoils it because Grischuk gives away an important Tempo
