Kinghunt: <nathanschulz: How is the endgame in Nakamura-Ivanchuk?>

Slightly better for white, but almost certainly drawn.

Jun-14-11  bogo78: So much walking around Nisi's table. Radjabov, Vassily and Naka must have dug a trench in that carpet... I am getting distracted, I hope Nisi does not mind. You know, now that they have those screens with all games I don't understand why do they have to come and go by the table itself?
Jun-14-11  kia0708: Link to today's three games:
Karjakin - Carlsen
Nakamura - Ivanchuk
Nisi - Radjabov

virginmind: nisipeanu and radjabov called it a day too.
Jun-14-11  kia0708: draw, draw, and another draw

it's Candidates all over again :/

plang: 4 decisive results out of 12 games is a reasonable result for a tournament of this strength.
Jun-14-11  ycbaywtb: the score table is fairly bunched right now, the 5th round is crucial before the 1/2 way point

Perhaps, but the first round was so promising!

SatelliteDan: I would advise all to look at the drawn games and ask why? Could be a good platform for instruction.

Count the negatives and divide by 2 - if evenly divisible then a positive comment

Jun-14-11  kia0708: I wish Kramnik was here. At least would be clear whom to blame for all the 9 draws so far :-)

SatelliteDan: Can the stronger chess engines evaluate a positional draw?
Jun-14-11  anandrulez: Satellite yes you are right but also I should say today Chess players make moves that are slighlty tricky despite being drawish , to confuse opponents . Most players avoid straight forward draw lines and go for tricky lines to outfox their opponents. Which is why a win should how the winner should think.
Jun-14-11  BadKnight: <kia0708: I wish Kramnik was here. At least would be clear whom to blame for all the 9 draws so far :-)>

I believe there is a reason why kramnik gets bashing - he always plays for draw with black. for a player of his caliber we could expect more. his black repertoire backfired on him in the final match of the world championship in Bonn. he did not have a reasonable reply to e4, which is sad.

Kings Tournament 2011 - R4

Sergey Karjakin became a GM at 12 - the youngest ever. He is from the Russian part of Ukraine but now represents Russia and lives in Moscow. As black I went for 1.e4 c6 and the Caro-Kann variation. After the opening my nice-looking pawn on d4 was likely to fall eventually, but it restricted white's play and compensated for structural weaknesses on blacks queenside. After the game Karjakin said he was unhappy about his position, and this explains his surprising c5-push exchanging his c-pawn for my b-pawn. After Qd5! black is better. He spent well above half an hour on his next move and found one of several good defenses. After simplifications his active rooks prevented me from making any progress despite my extra pawn in the two rook and knight endgame. I eventually returned the pawn and we drew just before the 1st time control. The others drew as well, and I'm still sole leader. After the 1st round win I climbed back to the no 1 spot on the live rating list. Each draw against somewhat lower rated opponents costs me points but I'm still marginally ahead. On the last round before the free day, I'm white against Nisipeanu Wednesday. Magnus Carlsen, Bazna, June 14th

Jun-14-11  Blunderdome: Anyone been watching the videos on the official site? Some good post-mortems.
Jun-14-11  bartonlaos: <Blunderdome> Yes, I am enjoying them. I feel that the Rd3 Carlsen-Radjabov presentation is especially good, with small moments - such as around 4minutes when Carlsen says he kicked himself for not entering a forced drawing line...then smiles when Radjabov who had been quickly running through its subvariations, suddenly points out a mate that somehow lies within it!

Jun-15-11  dangerhump: The draws in this tournament are not comparable to the ones in the Candidates in my opinion. For example, Naka and Ivanchuk played to K+R vs. K+R...
Jun-15-11  bharatiy: its sad that Carlsen is giving some significance to live rating where difference between him and WC is negligible, its OK as a fun, but to think it as some achievement is not so praiseworthy!
Jun-15-11  Pjalle: @ bharatiy. Of course Magnus cares about the ratings. His sponsorship with G-Star was based on his no.1 ranking. Being no.1 translated directly into $$$ and prestige. Chess is a sport like any other where the best gets all the attention and the money.
Jun-15-11  blueofnoon: Of course you can be cool and pretend ratings are just numbers but then in my opinion you are lying to yourself.
