chessgames.com: This tournament is already on round three but we are having difficultly locating good PGN for the time being.

In the meantime, here are round #2 games and here is a link to the official site: http://www.chessa.co.za/tournament_...

Jun-27-11  Birthday Boy: Happy Birthday! Commonwealth and South African Open Tournament!
Jun-28-11  PhilFeeley: <chessgames.com> How'd you even get these games? They're on round 7 now and nary a PGN file in sight. Very bad.
Jun-30-11  PhilFeeley: They finally have more games available today. Round 8 has Short playing Jones.
Jun-30-11  PhilFeeley: Of course Short-Jones today has to be an English opening! The position after 19...Nd7 is messy:

1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 g6 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 0-0 5. e4 d6 6. Nge2 c5 7. 0-0 Nc6 8. d3 Rb8 9. h3 Ne8 10. Be3 Nd4 11. Rb1 Bd7 12. b4 b6 13. a4 a5 14. Bxd4 cxd4 15. Nb5 e5 16. bxa5 bxa5 17. Qd2 Bc6 18. f4 Nf6 19. f5 Nd7....

Jun-30-11  PhilFeeley: A few more moves:

20. Ra1 Nc5 21. Ra3 Bf6 22. fxg6 fxg6 23. h4 Rb7 24. Nc1 g5 25. Nb3...

Short has only 12 minutes left, Jones has 23. Something has to crack soon..

Jun-30-11  PhilFeeley: Good game. Ramping up the pressure:

25...Nxb3 26. Rxb3 gxh4 27. gxh4 Rbf7 28. Qh6 Bxh4 29. Rxf7 Rxf7 30 Nxd6...

Jun-30-11  PhilFeeley: The game must be over by now. The live feed is stuck on move 30. Does anyone see a win for white?
Jun-30-11  PhilFeeley: Jones held the draw!

30...Rf6 31. Qxh4 Qxd6 32. c5 Qf8 33. Rb8 Qxb8 34. Qxf6 Qc7 35. Kh2 Bxa4 36. Bh3 Be8 37. c6 Bf7 38. Be6 Bxe6 39. Qxe6+ Kf8 40. Qf6+ Ke8 41. Qe6+ Kd8 42. Qf6+ Ke8 43. Qe6+ 1/2-1/2

Jul-01-11  watwinc: We're looking at a tournament where people leave their queen en prise. What's the background, please?
Jul-01-11  bartonlaos: <watwinc> We're looking at an Open played at the rate of 2 games per day. So wide-spreads of ratings between opponents, lack of adequate preparation between equally-matched opponents, and player fatigue may be affecting results.
Jul-01-11  PhilFeeley: <watwinc> Which game were you talking about?
Jul-02-11  watwinc: <PhilFeeley> Phiri v. Jones is one, Pesa v. Jones another oddity
Jul-03-11  Chessinfinite: Murray could not beat Nadal in Wimbledon !. I was anyway rooting for Nadal, he was far too good for Murray.

Sad day for british tennis, Murray missed out on a possible official honor or something.. :)

It would have been different if they arrange an Anglo American double team, Nadal's team will then have a real fight i suppose ? .. :o )

Jul-04-11  PhilFeeley: According to this:

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr521...

the headline is wrong. Short and Jones tied for first in the end. Jere tied for third.

Jul-06-11  Crazy Diamond: It was a 11 round torunament, but here the resullts are only given up to round 10 (or 9 i some instances)

Domdaniel: Jones actually took the title on tie-break after sharing 1st place with Short.
