Maatalkko: Is Dorfman being paid to appear at this event? I know he's "emeritus", but it really makes no sense to me that he's here just to shake hands and the other players are allowing him to do that.

Maatalkko: I was sympathetic towards the faction of GM’s who protested anti-drawing rules until this year. Seems that every event with them has benefited and without them has suffered. I understand the idea that the absolute percentage may not vary much, but there are light years of difference between a drawn struggle and a drawn sham.
Aug-22-11  Brettwith2ts: Does anyone know where in Caen the games are being played?
Aug-23-11  Tadeucouto: Edoard play the French game and win.
Very good game ...
Aug-23-11  polarmis: <Brettwith2ts>, on the university campus, it seems (though I don't now Caen or any more details!).
Aug-23-11  Albertan: From Chessbase.com:
"Feller's interview, and a solution to the cheating scandal 23.08.2011 – The French Championship is in it's eighth round, with four GMs in the joint lead. The event is marred by continued suspicion and anti-cheating measures, brought on by accusations that one of the participants had in the past engaged in organised cheating. Sebastian Feller has given an interview on the subject, and we have a proposal on how to quickly clear up the matter":http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

anthro: A lot of short drawss!
Aug-23-11  Brettwith2ts: <polarmis> Thanks! Yeah, campus makes sense now that I think about it, I was trying to think of convention centers or big hotels, and I was drawing a blank.
Aug-23-11  Kanatahodets: <Maatalkko: Is Dorfman being paid to appear at this event? I know he's "emeritus", but it really makes no sense to me that he's here just to shake hands and the other players are allowing him to do that.> i got your humor! i completely forgot who Dorfman is: a Shlehter of old generation. though Carl had made a masterpiece today. i`m sure Iosip has some too... I don't see much of problem him making so many draws, he is an old buddy, let him enjoy:)
Aug-23-11  Illogic: <Kanatahodets> In a national championship, though?
Aug-23-11  dumbgai: Life must be good in France. I've never been there myself but that's what I hear from everyone. Seems the GMs agree.
Aug-24-11  Everyone: <dumbgai: Life must be good in France. I've never been there myself but that's what I hear from everyone.> être comme un coq en pâte
Aug-24-11  znsprdx: @<Maatalkko:> "sham" for sure: well expressed. As I've pointed out countless times it would be so easy to put an end to these pathetic draws by introducing a pro-active scoring system.

Already the 3 points for a win idea has shown to make a difference... but maybe a black win is worth 4 points to 3 for white such that at the very least 'draws' could be divided into a split: 2 points for Black 1 point for White....

There are other considerations that could enter into the picture such as difference in ratings - which could require half-point adjustments, at least in single round robin (and even Swiss?) tournaments

Of course this would greatly upset comparisons with past statistics - poor Kramnik and Leko would find their results not quite so impressive.

Aug-24-11  TheRavenPK: Everything in this post is my idea and I don't want to tell it is true or something, just something to think and discuss about.

Imagine the situation: every player participating in this tournament had before the tournament agreed to draw with GM Dorfman. Even the players who want to win it agreed to "lose" half point. Then, suddenly, you play this GM in penultimate round and are co-leader with such player as MVL, who is able to win almost any time he wants or needs to. It is very tempting to break the agreement and play for a win.

What do you think, is this scenario possible here? If yes, what do you think about the moral aspect? There is lot of views you can choose..

Aug-25-11  kappertjes: <TheRavenPK> Well if you gave your word, that should be what you do. A man without his word, is nothing.
Aug-25-11  Illogic: If he agreed to pre-arrange a draw, then his morals weren't there to begin with
Aug-25-11  kappertjes: <Illogic> That is probably true, still if such an agreement was made by all participants no one (except the public I guess) would be adversely affected.

haydn20: The lower-ranked players who tried hard but lost might well resent being pressured into such an agreement.
Aug-25-11  Atking: With 7/11 Maxime is Champion of France. Congratulations! Many players at the second place. Fressinet, Bacrot, Istratescu, Feller... and the next are very closed.
Aug-25-11  number 23 NBer: Did Fressinet lose to Bauer? That's the only way Maxime would win clear first, as long as Edouard didn`t beat Le Roux.
Aug-25-11  polarmis: Yep, Fressinet lost. Does anyone know what happened in Feller's game? The final position doesn't seem in any way resignable!?

perfidious: <dumbgai: Life must be good in France. I've never been there myself but that's what I hear from everyone....>

It's been many years since I last visited, but I enjoyed it too-in the early 1990s, I briefly considered going to play in their league.

Aug-26-11  Atking: <polarmis: Yep, Fressinet lost. Does anyone know what happened in Feller's game? The final position doesn't seem in any way resignable!?> Yes the position looks balanced. I think Feller won on time. During these last days the pressure was great with some surprises. It seems that all players have their good and bad days and I think the final result is quite fair.
Aug-26-11  laskersteinitz: Etienne Bacrot is still my hero! But then again, so is MVL.
Dec-21-11  knighterrant999: The French have no fighting spirit, in chess, or otherwise.
