Oct-21-11    Ezzy: It's so refreshing to hear people discussing the Kosintseva sisters draw when Zhao Xue has just won an extremely strong Women's Grand Prix by 2.5 points with 9.5/11 and a rating performance of 2816!! With a RP of 2974 going into the last round, she finally ran out of steam and lost to her compatriot Ju Wenjun. I was willing for her not to lose so she would have had a RP in the 2900's, but to say that it was an anticlimax is a bit churlish, It was still a World Class performance, and one that will be remembered for a long time in Women's chess. Congratulations to Zhao Xue for a magnificent display of chess!! Oct-23-11    frogbert: yes, that's what they do. and thereby they get an arbitrarily high "performance". my rule of thumb: one can basically disregard most performance ratings based on 80% scores or more - the only thing they really tell you is that the player was in a different league compared to his/her opposition in that event. if the event is cat 21+ and a player still scores 80% or more, then asking for stronger opposition is a bit harsh - but even carlsen can't repeat nanjing 2009 on demand (although 70% score in 2010 was a very fine attempt). <All I'm really claiming is that it would have been the result that impressed me the most.> that's an entirely subjective scale, obviously. it goes without saying that zhao xue would've been completely incapable of reproing <any> of carlsen's results in 2011 (as an example) - so i guess the "best result" in your case also must be seen as being relative to the person achieving it. alternatively, we're in totally different camps when it comes to judging what "best result" means. :o) Oct-23-11    Blunderdome: Well, how many points do you think Carlsen would amass if he played Zhao Xao's eleven opponents? "lucky streaks" aren't what impress me - see my rule of thumb again wrt performances.
