ajile: Congratulations to Vugar Gashimov for yet again winning a game as Black with the suppoosedly "inferior" Benoni Defense.
Nov-14-11  k0mi: congrats to Hungary's bronze!
Nov-14-11  Refused: <Everett: <And otherwise the Berlin is not that dull, it's just that one line. If Aronian wanted to draw, he would've played the Marhsall. But stuff like that happens.> My have times changed...>

The point is basically Marshall means 30 moves+ theory with a forced draw or even endgame. (We are speaking about the 2700+ level here, for you and me it's a different story ofc).

Berlin means in most variations complex endings. And not every single line is analyzed to death.

Same thing with Najdorf Sicilian. Bg5 is probably the sharpest attempt to play for a win with white. But if black goes for the poisoned pawn, it's drawn. Ofc here it is black who can force a draw in that line. (I am assuming ofc white concedes to the main lines). If both sides know what they are doing in terms of theory, you have an exchange of long outanalyzed lines and a draw.

So my point is, (Spanish) Marshall and (Najdorf) Poisoned Pawn look more exciting than they actually are.

Nov-14-11  Everett: <refused> yes, i got it, which is why I said what I said. Times have changed!

Ofc?

Of course?

Nov-14-11  ARMENIA: Why isn't Armenia's National Team having any friendlies?

Look at the United States, since the introduction of Klinsmann as their head coach, they have had 6 friendly matches.

Come on Armenia, you are in top 50 and you should conduct at least four friendlies just to keep the efforts of last year. Players need experience and the more times they play together, the more they start trusting one another...

Vardan Minasyan has been a wonderful addition to the coaching staff but we need games to play! We can not wait until World Cup 2014 qualifiers and just enter with a mere one friendly prior to the important matches! Friendlies are conducted to test new players and see how well some schemes work over other options...

Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai... A world away and still can not sleep when it comes to watching our boys produce results!

HeMateMe: Other teams like to have Friendlies with team USA because we can't score any goals. It's always a friendly night for the opposition...

Nov-14-11  ARMENIA: <HeMateMe> When I was living in the States, it was somewhat alarming how no one really cared for futbol. When I mean no one, I am speaking of the percentage of interest compared to other parts of the world. I always said, as long as they continued to refer to the game as "soccer" I'd never care for anything happening in the States.

Armenia needs to play friendlies! They need to put forth some experimental teams and get the ball rolling. They need to start bringing up U21 players and giving them the necessary experience... I am nervous but all I have to do is look out the window and see La Celeste at the top of the world!

God Bless Uruguay

HeMateMe: Things have changed a bit. World Cup soccer is on all the big screen TVs in the sports bars, even the guys who have to count to ten on their ribs are trying to appreciate soccer (football). Thats saying something.

Beckham playing in Los Angeles is also a plus. Becks always brings media attention, he of the great set passing game. His team, the Galacticos, might win the MLS championship this year. They will be partying into the night in Mexico, if not Los Angeles.

all good--its a sport that emphasizes fitness, teamwork and speed, not big muscles, man-boobs and snarling for the screen. This doesn't mean that we Americans are going to give up our steroid-man boobs and snarling, it just means that we are observing the world around us and saying "ok, there are other sports, too..."

Nov-15-11  ARMENIA: http://www.armenianow.com/sports/so...

This will come back and bite them in the rear... I won't comment on the goalkeeper necessity issue but I would comment on the verdict of not having a single friendly match until the summer of 2012. What are they thinking?

I am so happy I am in Uruguay - a real futbol superpower.

Yo, cool story bro.

Nov-15-11  GlennOliver: bronkenstein,

Rather late to reply in this thread, but the Guardian reports -

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/201...

"England's target now is to do better (than at ETCC) at the 150-nation World Olympiad at Istanbul 2012. The key will be fielding a maximum-strength squad including Luke McShane and Matthew Sadler who have full-time jobs and were unavailable for the Euroteams."

Nov-15-11  GlennOliver: Also many congratulations to Michael Adams on his individual gold medal at the European team championship - a fantastic achievement against a very tough field.
Nov-15-11  bronkenstein: Ty for the link GlennOliver , BTW not too much effort will be needed <to do better> ;)

IMO 1.Adams 2.Sadler/Short 3.Short/Sadler 4.McShane/Gawain would be the best attempt to `steal` a medal , although we are still to see Matthew`s performance against the elite (speaking of board 2).

Nov-16-11  GlennOliver: Cheek! : )

David Howell had a disappointing ETCC, unfortunately.

David would normally be a strong contender for the Olympiad team, but his university studies must limit his training and competition time.

Which is your own national team?

Nov-16-11  SimonWebbsTiger: It's hard to say much about Matthew other than he is come back kid of the year!

He certainly hasn't done himself any harm these past two tourneys and certainly, if not a fast place because of rust, is in contention as a good reserve to draw on.

Agree thoroughly on Adams. The medal couldn't have been won by a more mild mannered Cornishman!

Nov-16-11  bronkenstein: <Which is your own national team?> Serbian , but I am not following them too closely , during last ETCC I was mostly watching Azeris, Russia , Armenia (all boards) and few solo personal favorites (like Topa,Chuky,Mickey,Pono,Leko etc - last one more for nostalgic reasons).

Amazing that Hansen and Aronian *both* missed this tactical sequence.

Nov-18-11  polarmis: <notyetagm>, they didn't miss that sequence - the game's corrupt at the official website and no-one bothered to correct it. I wrote about it here: http://www.whychess.org/node/2952

The one actual blunder at the end was 38.fxe8=Q??, falling for Aronian's cunning trap in an absolutely overwhelming position.

zanzibar: Going back to the 1st page of kibitzing, there is the very first comment:

<waustad: Lots of great players will be present. It starts Nov. 3, at 15:00 in Greece. I think that is 8:00 AM Eastern US time, but I've botched the conversion before. Pairings can be found here: http://euro2011.chessdom.com/etcc-t... >

European Team Championship (2011)

Now, doing a google search on <European Team Championship (2011)>

<The third SPAR European Team Championships took place on 18 and 19 June 2011. The Competition was divided between four divisions, with results determining promotion and relegation between them. The Super League event was held in Stockholm, at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium. The Super League was won by the Russian team with a record 385 points, more than 50 points ahead of the second placed German team.>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_E...

See? We need more exact information and dates. <waustad> gives this tournament as in Nov, in Greece - not in June, in Sweden.

How are we to even keep the Event labeling straight?
