But it seems like a normal event, aside from the odd name. The Brits should run a 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' tournament, where nice, generous GMs donate rating points to deserving royals. |

| | visayanbraindoctor: Huebner, Hort, and Vaganian are former Candidates, and Gulko is a former Soviet Union chess champion. In their prime, they would swamp the ladies by an even bigger margin. GM Hort is known to have emigrated to Germany; I am not sure if he has played for the German national team in international team competitions. Huebner might be the strongest native-born German chess master after Lasker. Which reminds me to ask- why has Germany, such a chess giant in the late 1800s and early 1900s, failed to produce players near Lasker's caliber since then? |

| | HeMateMe: Well, West German Huebner was quite a powerhouse, playing in the Candidates matches three times. East German Wolfgang Uhlmann was one of the the better players of his generation. You get a Lasker, you get spoiled, unfortunately.
Could be a wait, for another great German player. Holland had Max Euwe. Thirty years after Max's prime they had Jan Timman. Since then...... Luke Van Wyly? |

Had Junge survived, he would have to face the monsters of Soviet chess in the 1950s- Botvinnik, Bronstein, Smyslov, not to mention a rising Tal, Spassky, and Petrosian in the 1960s. They would probably have run him down if he was a lazy fellow. With some hard work though he may have made it into the Candidates with them, and it would have been interesting to have seen him battling it out with them. Junge did play Keres 3x, but that's not much.

| | FSR: I remember Pachman writing about Junge in "Pachman's Decisive Games." He thought Junge was a potential world champion had he not died in World War II. He was an officer in the Nazi Army, so I'm not sure how sorry I should feel for him. |
