Jan-06-12  JoergWalter: Giri will definitely have a saying on the future champions.
Jan-06-12  solskytz: Funny how it now looks like an evenly-contested, drawish tourney if one just looks at the final scores
Jan-06-12  vanytchouck: Congrats Giri for this very first and convincing win in a great tournament.

I like this kid's behaviour on the chessboard very much.

He's doing exactly what a prodigy has to do in his youth.

PLAY HIS STYLE WITHOUT FEAR OF NO ONE.

I had been very impressed by his progress in Wijk Aan Zee 2011 and very glad to see that he's keeping on going ahead that way.

A new student for Garry (specially when you compare the style) ?

Jan-06-12  JoergWalter: <vanytchouck: A new student for Garry (specially when you compare the style) ?>

well, he doesn't need a coach that was already fired 2 times. I guess sponsors are not willing to burn their money. Karpov to learn from or Kramnik would be more helpful.

SteinitzLives: Giri deserves the credit for the timeliness of his good play, and knowing when to draw. He is just a kid, good things are on the horizon for him no doubt.

al wazir: What did I tell you?
Jan-06-12  Namawiz: An unprecedented turn of events. Congratulations giri. Vitiugov and ivanchuk get sweet wins.
Jan-06-12  JoergWalter: Giri displayed great play, coolness and cleverness.
Something Ivanchuk (my personal favourite) will not achieve in a 100 years. With regret or relief that is just him.
Jan-06-12  Ezzy: Fascinating tournament! Congrats to Giri for the biggest win of his career. What an amazing comeback after losing 2 games early on. Sometimes it's easy to make negative comments too soon. After Giri's defeat against Nakamura, 'The Week in Chess' States -

<<"Anish Giri seems out of form> and he made at least a couple of important tactical miscalculations on the way to losing on the white side of a King's Indian to Hikaru Nakamura, who shares the lead with Ivanchuk on 8 points">

It shows a lot of charachter to 'dig deep' when things start badly for you in a tournament, but 'hats off' to Giri who made a memorable comeback to win a very strong tournament!

We've had it all - A great comeback from Giri, a meltdown from Chucky, A mega collapse by Nakamura, and victories in the final round by the 'tail enders' who stopped the tournament victory going to the two leaders.

A remarkable end to the chess year!!

TheFocus: The ones who bet on Giri to win are nodding their heads knowingly as they collect their winnings.

The rest of us are tearing out our hair.

I lost all four bets this round. (So did a lot of others!!)

And on borrowed money at that.

parmetd: Focus, how can you borrow money for the chessbookie?
Jan-06-12  JoergWalter: <TheFocus> you may have lost your bets but you saved the money for a haircut and trimming the beard. The "borrowed money" part is the sad part. Will you get your legs broken?

No, I have been shaving them myself for a whe now.

<The "borrowed money" part is the sad part. Will you get your legs broken?>

I don't think so. He's had his eye on my sister for a while. I have to set up a date and pay for the meal.

Jan-06-12  galdur: <wordfunph>

waustad: That was quite a turnaround for the youngsters. Early on it looked like they were getting schooled, but they came back to get first and equal second.
Jan-06-12  JoergWalter: <TheFocus> take them out to Pizza Hut.
