Stonehenge: Yes, and Hopman could have won with the simple 38...Qxe3.

Stonehenge: Hmm, she missed 48. Qd2.
Jan-24-12  goodevans: <Jan-22-12 goodevans: After Sadler's sixth consecutive draw, perhaps Schut can be more confident of a better result in the next game.>

Told you so!

Jan-24-12  goodevans: <Penguincw: < Marmot PFL > I know. However, when the 2600 players win the group, they'll go to Group B next year where it will be much harder.>

Except that the 2600 players won't both top the group.

Jan-24-12  Penguincw: < "Sweden’s Hans Tikkanen and Russia’s Maxim Turov both won their games to remain tied for first place in this group. In the same group, Holland's Lisa Schut achieved her first WGM norm after drawing her game against England's Matthew Sadler." >

This world is going to be one WGM better soon.

waustad: I just saw a vid of Lisa Schut and she sounds like she grew up in California. The Dutch speak great English, and lots of other languages, but is she another Caruana? Nationality seems to be very fluid in chess.
Jan-25-12  goodevans: <wausted> I used to work in the NL with a dutch girl who had a Scottish accent. One of the consequences of mixed nationality parentage. Perhaps a factor with Lisa too?

  ketchuplover: Hopman over Tikkanen!
Jan-25-12  Penguincw: < "Russia’s Maxim Turov became the sole leader in this group after a quick draw in 16 moves with black against Germany’s Elisabeth Paehtz. Tikkanen fell back to second place, half a point behind Turov." >

And Turov takes the lead by half a point. This sort of reminds me of Group A 2011 where there was a battle between Nakamura and Anand. Anand fell half a point behind by drawing a game. :-\

waustad: Danilian has dropped nearly 23 ratings points here.
Jan-27-12  Penguincw: Tikkanen should be able to beat Grover.

Jan-27-12  Penguincw: Turov and Tikkanen are now tied for first, with their nearest rival about 1 and a half points behind.
Jan-27-12  Penguincw: < "Sweden’s Hans Tikkanen was rewarded with the 100-euro daily prize in Group C for his fine win with white in 30 moves from a Slav Defense against India’s Sahaj Grover. The victory brought the Swede back alongside Russia’s Maxim Turov on top of the standings in this division of the tournament." >

Jan-28-12  Penguincw: Sadler really not in form. With the WHITE pieces, he lost to Tikkanen! Turov kept pace by beating Adhiban.
Jan-28-12  Penguincw: The only group that is not one-sided. Tikkanen or Turov could win, or they will have to share (and both get invited to Group B next year).

Biggest Gains: Tikkanen (+20, new rating is 2569)
Goudriaan (+16, new rating is 2295)

Biggest Losses: Sadler (-27, new rating is 2633)
Danielian (-19, new rating is 2471)

Jan-28-12  Birthday Boy: Come on Sadler
Jan-29-12  Penguincw: Turov already insured at least first by defeating Goudriaan (something Sadler couldn't do). Tikkanen holding a slight advantage over Sachdev.
Jan-29-12  Penguincw: Tikkanen still trying.
Jan-29-12  Penguincw: Tikkanen at a dead even game. Congratz Turov!
Jan-29-12  LDJ: Remarkable that this page has more kibitzing than the B group page. :)
Jan-29-12  Penguincw: Congratz to Maxim Turov who won Group C solo, and will receive an invitation to Group B next year. Can't say the same for Sadler though. :-\
