| Jan-24-12 | | Mudphudder: Amazing, no draws yet. At least not in the first 9 games for far. |
| Jan-24-12 | | Gogia: Is it blitz?? why are there no draws?? :) |
| Jan-24-12 | | belgradegambit: In the first round there are huge rating differences between the players thus all decisive games. Note that Hanley did upset Sutovsky however. |

 | | Shams: <belgradegambit><In the first round there are huge rating differences between the players thus all decisive games.> I've been saying for years that the first round of a major open tournament is a gold mine for study, precisely because of the rating disparities. |

 | | waustad: I was surprised to see Svidler vs Houska in the first round. She is rated well above the median rating in the list of players in the Master group. There must be something more going on than in the weekend Swisses that I played in years ago. I was usually right near the median so I played the best or worst in the first round. |
| Jan-24-12 | | Troller: I think they use extended seeding, pitting the highest rated quarter against the next quarter; at least Houska is somewhere around that divide, she is quite far from the bottom half. |

 | | brankat: One draw only! That's the spirit :-) |

| Jan-24-12 | | Penguincw: < This giant open tournament attracts luminaries such as Svidler, Mamedyarov, Adams, Short, Hou Yifan, Akobian, Korchnoi, Shirov and Judit Polgar. Discussion forum now open. > Really good players here. |

Jan-24-12
 | | waustad: <troller> That makes sense. When I played in small tournaments, it was usually just split in half. |
Jan-25-12
 | | Shams: Can anyone find a game score or result for Nigel Short? |

 | | whiteshark: <Shams> Check out for the good tournament page: http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c... I'd guess you get what you want. Probably even more. :D |

 | | parmetd: 56 grandmasters in the Open... I think only Aeroflot is a stronger open swiss. Even the World Open pales in comparison. |
| Jan-25-12 | | Troller: <parmetd> The European Individual Championships is also pretty strong, I guess those are the 3 strongest open tournaments in recent years. |
| Jan-25-12 | | SimonWebbsTiger: Politiken Cup in Denmark has a fair share of GMs turn out. This year Dreev, Potkin, Ivan Sokolov, Jan Timman and Lajos Portisch are among the participants. http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/tur... |
Jan-25-12
 | | ketchuplover: Portisch ftw! |
Jan-25-12
 | | Octavia: accelerated swiss! The top half play amongst each others & the bottom have, too. It's probably the same in the second game. So, if a low graded player wins his two games s/he is allowed to enter the top half. Shirov only = most others, including Short, won their first game - may be Korchnoi lost? |
Jan-25-12
 | | waustad: Korchnoi beat Rafael Rodriguez Lopez in the first round. |
