beenthere240: Nice try by Hou. Game was drawn early on so she had to get risky.

Sneaky: <the commentator got into the drink!> What do you expect, with a "Ginger GM" ??
Feb-02-12  s4life: Nigel had a much easier road to 7.5 points.. it all seems a bit unfair imho, but that's what often happens in swiss tourneys
Feb-02-12  voyager39: Don't quite understand the format. Doesn't everyone play everyone at least once??
Feb-02-12  Pantagruel: It appears that Korchnoi also scored 6 points. Why isn't he on the ranking list?

Maatalkko: Appears that Hou had a 2877.5 performance rating while Nigel's was only 2836.3. So <s4life> is right, Hou's performance was more impressive during the tournament's classical phase.

The good news is that Hou will gain solid points, and all indications are that she will still be underrated at ~2635 or so. Hopefully Hou will progress to the 2700 area within the next few years, thus goading Judit into a match.

spinal pat: <voyager> I believe it was a swiss tourney format, so it depends on your result which opponent you will get. It can't be known up front. And no not everybody will play everybody per se.
Feb-02-12  Riverbeast: That pompous windbag Short won over Hou?

Very disappointing....

But great tournament for her nonetheless

Feb-02-12  Penguincw: Congratulations to Short for winning first place (after tie-breaks) such a strong tournament.
Feb-02-12  Chessinfinite: Looks like Hou had a greater performance rating overall. Congrats to Hou Yifan and good job by Short too to take the title in blitz!

I can imagine a fully inspired Short before taking on a little chinese girl :) .. Maybe now the Englishman gets a call from their Palace for greatness finally !! , and the jokers at TWIC will write an extremely well behaved report :)

FWIW, I think Hou would have beaten Short in classical time control, too bad it came down to Blitz

Robin01: I do not like the idea of Blitz playoffs to Classic Chess events.
Feb-02-12  Riverbeast: Hou still ended up with 22,000 euros though

The 12,000 euro second prize, and the 10,000 euro first woman prize

Feb-02-12  GlennOliver: Great tournament play by both Nigel Short and Yifan Hou.

Good to see Nigel in evergreen form, and Ms Hou shows every sign that the Open top rankings will soon have another woman player to join Judit Polgar.

Feb-02-12  dangerhump: So what are the next good tournaments to look forward to?
Feb-02-12  Riverbeast: According to chessbase, Hou still won the 20,000 euro first prize, along with the 10,000 euro woman prize

She had the best performance and actually won the classical tournament...The playoff was just for the title

I agree with you on that matter (not just our nicknames...).

Feb-02-12  Riverbeast: In honor of her sterling performance (with I'm sure, many more to come)... I must play once again the ode to Ms. Hou

From the Isley Brothers....'Hou's That Lady?

Enjoy!

Having seen the quality of the classic games, and seen the live telecast of the blitz games, I have to agree.

What a complete anti-climax.

Feb-02-12  chessmoron: Hou Yifan must be yelling at herself of losing to Krishnan Sasikiran.-the man who Short beat.
