Zvjaginsev tried (this time without success) his surprise weapon - the French Wing Gambit!

jamesmaskell: Draw agreed in Eljanov game.

Bartel wins on first tiebreak (number of Black games) and gets the invite to Dortmund being held 12-22 July.

Feb-15-12  siamesedream: Congrats to my countryman GM Mateusz Bartel!

Mateusz will be defending Polish Champ title soon (18-26th February):

waustad: There are a lot of draws today but they seem to be going for it. Final rounds often get 13 movers and the like.

Just a natural thing imo. They played competitive chess for 9 days straight. Some are happy with their result and want to wrap them up rather quick. Some played a rather bad tournament, and just want it to end asap and best forget about it. For both groups a quick draw seems to be appealing esp. if they are in the table's nowhereland, with no chance to win something. So I can understand the motivation behind those final round quick draws.

parmetd: Ah, I used to specialize in that Winged Gambit :)
Feb-15-12  zoren: Sad how Zviagintsev didn't get anywhere with that line, the idea seems like it should at provide for some compensation for the pawn.
Feb-15-12  bronkenstein: One of the reasons for relatively fast 9th round draws also might lie in the simplest simple nervous and physical exhaustion.

PS On Zvjaginsevīs wing adventures - live by the offbeat, die by the offbeat =)

Feb-15-12  kia0708: pity there is no English/German language version of that page :-(

Feb-15-12  jon01: So, it's Bartel who plays in Dortmund this year. It would be a great challenge to him.
Feb-15-12  Penguincw: Congratz to Bartel who edges out on tiebreak. I will look forward to see him play at Dortmund this year. Let's see if can hold Kramnik to a draw.

waustad: <refused>I understand the issue, these are people playing a board game for a living. However, many games I expected to be mere formalities were played until after time control. Could the Hort prize money plan have something to do with it? They only split half of the money in a tie but the rest is paid based on tie breaks. Maybe there are a few extra Euros at stake this time. In many open torunaments, if players have a guaranteed piece of 1st with a draw, it is over before they enter the room.

waustad: <kia>Ah yes. When I was in Poland in the 70s it seemed that I was always in 3 language conversations. When I talked to 2 Poles, one spoke English and one spricht Deutsche.

VishyFan: Any idea about the Blitz qualification parings & games? The Aeroflot website http://aeroflotchess.org/material.p... mentions that the games would start on 16-Feb at 10:00, which was more than 2 hours ago. I neither see any links on the official site nor on Chessbomb..

Anybody has more info?

cro777: Winner of the tournament, the reigning Polish champion GM Mateusz Bartel, is not only a chess player. He likes to write about chess as well, he said. He is the editor-in-chief of the Polish Chess Magazine "Mat" (Mate), "a grandmaster magazine for all". Bartel lives in Warsaw. For six years now, WGM Marta PrzeŸdziecka has been his girflriend. About his qualification for the 40th Sparkassen Chess Meeting in Dortmund he said:

"It will be something special to me, to play such a strong tournament. Of course, I will be an underdog, but I hope I can show some good chess".

Sergey Karjakin won the Blitz tournament collecting 15/18 ahead of Grischuk 14.5/18.

Seems a bit last minute and with a format change. Should still draw a crowd with the prize-fund though.
