  cro777: Controversial last round draw

In the last round, in a decisive game Cramling - Lahno, the players copied the game Shimanov - Timofeev, a 17 move draw.

In the Gruenfeld Exchange Variation with 8.Be3, they followed the game Cramling - Dronavalli (the Atatürk International Women Masters Chess Tournament, Istambul, Turkey 2008).

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. cxd5 Nxd5 6. e4 Nxc3 7. bxc3 c5 8. Be3 Qa5 9. Bd2 O-O 10. Be2

Here, Dronavalli played <10...cxd4!?> (Cramling won the game in 24 moves).

Lahno opted for <10...Bg4> and the players simply copied the game Shimanov - Timofeev (62nd Russian Championship Higher League, Ulan Ude, Russia 2009) which ended in a draw by repetition in 17 moves.

10... Bg4 11. O-O Rd8 12. Rb1 cxd4 13. cxd4 Qxa2 14. Ra1 Qb2 15. Rb1 Qa2 16. Ra1 Qb2 17. Rb1 Draw

Feb-22-12  Penguincw: Congratz to Dzagnidze, with her last minute black win, to tie it up and eventually win on tiebreaks.

waustad: If you think about expected income, taking a short draw was probably the best decision for PC. On this occasion she lost the Armageddon game on time, if another poster was correct in the description. (The transmission I was looking at failed during the tiebreaks.) In any case I cannot imagine that the Bellon y Cramling family is making the kind of money from sponsors that MC takes in, so prize money on the women's tour is likely to be a much more important consideration for them. Taking the draw guaranteed at least $7000 and made $10000 very likely.
