| Mar-12-12 | | Troller: <dangerhump> Krush has TPR 2446 after rd 7, Arnold & Kiewra have TPRs below 2400. GM norms look not too likely. Coleman has TPR 2445, and an IM norm should be within reach, though. |

Mar-12-12
 | | Peligroso Patzer: On board one today, Caruana played <1. e4>, and then 10 minutes ran off Sokolov's clock before he replied with <1. ... e5>. This event must not have a zero tolerance policy w/r/t late arrival at boards, unless Sokolov was playing a la Bronstein vs. Boleslavsky. |

Mar-12-12
 | | Peligroso Patzer: ... and now (as he ponders his response to <6. ... Be6>) Caruana (apparently not fully booked up on the latest nuances in the Cozio Defense) has fallen 20 minutes behind on the clock. |

| Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: click for larger viewonline chessbase db only has 3 games here, the first one being so-gupta from 2008 (when gupta blundered his queen for a rook on move 11 - and played on for another 17 moves). 6... Be6 is a sound pawn sacrifice, since taking the pawn with 7. Qxe4 Bd5! 8. Bxc6+ Nxc6 9. Nxc6+ Bxe4 10. Nxd8 Rxd8 11. 0-0 Bd3! 12. Re1+ Kd7 is good for black: click for larger viewthere even is a line where black gives *two* pawns and is fine: 9. Qe2 (instead of Nxc6+) Nxe5! 10. Qxe5+ Be7 11. Qxg7 Bf6: click for larger viewand white is terribly behind in development.
caruana came up with a "novelty" in this little explored line - 7. d4!? exd3 ep 8. Nxd4 click for larger viewso's original 7. Nxc6 bxc6 8. Ba6 seems a better try for advantage: click for larger view |

| Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: lovely opening in caruana-sokolov, i think. white was out of book and thinking on move 7, and black seemingly on move 8-9. unfortunately, since now both have spent a lot of time ending up in unknown territory, a short draw is quite likely. the players being the co-leaders of the event doesn't help either, i guess. |
 |
| Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: not short, but draw eventually. :o) |

Thanks. :) Oddly enough, I came across that website the other day. :-\ Also, the tournament gets tighter. Caruana still leads by half a point, but that crowd that is half a point behind is now increased from 2 to 4. One round to go, anything can happen (well, not literally). |
