Carlsen talked about it, sometimes he just <knows> what to do for some unknown reason. Moro is definitely very smart and can out-smart a lot of 2700ish players, but without intuition, he let Caruana slip away with a draw. Given the same position after black's 40th move, Carlsen would have finished Caruana easily. |

| | HeMateMe: Well, I thought the whole idea was that they WERE getting paid, this is just exhibition chess. Sochi, nice warm resort on the black Sea. It just seems like some of those deep pocketed energy czars are paying for all-star teams to clash with other all star teams, set them up in 4 star hotels on the Black Sea. Why would Peter Leko be there, if he wasn't getting paid? Perhaps the money isn't enough for people in North America to make the long trip. In Leko's case, he needs some good results to try and make it back into the elite group, to get some proper tournament invitations. |

| | waustad: One interesting point is that I don't recall anybody mentioning how a team is doing. That has a serious effect on the games, which is why I've often thought that team tourneys should not be rated. First place recently was hanging on the 4th board game. http://www.russiachess.org/images/s... If you go through the tournament (and many team tournaments), the top boards usually draw and the real action is on the bottom boards. Here we aren't seeing the 12 move draws as much as in some (the word has come down). Jakovenko is a counterexample because he has only one draw on board 1. |
