waustad: This year Victoria Cmilyte doesn't seem to be spending her birthday here.

PhilFeeley: 290 players and still about 30 at 3 and 0. Must be a fun event.
Jul-31-12  Troller: <waustad: This year Victoria Cmilyte doesn't seem to be spending her birthday here.> Her boyfriend Peter Heine Nielsen isn't here either, that may have something to do with it.

Cheparinov made it 4/4 by beating Danielsen in an interesting game yesterday, whereas top seeded many-time participant (and former winner) Malakhov took a quick draw as black vs Schandorff.

HeMateMe: Jan Timmans is in it--viva la 70s! Starsky and Hutch! Donna Summer! Dag Hammeplatz Square! The Sex Pistols! Nixon gets kicked out! The Exorcist! (no more girls get named Regan).

Jan is my dark horse favorite to win.

Jul-31-12  Troller: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Qe2?! are the opening moves of Hector-Sokolov today.

achieve: An interesting confrontation, for more than one reason, in this 6th round is one between WGM Alina L'Ami and Jan Timman.

Alina is the wife of GM Erwin L'Ami (also Dutch), so some added spice in this encounter, one could argue.

And that ended in a Monday puzzle:

Black (Timman) to move.

  achieve: heh ... No joke?

Alina will be in tears, although it happened to the best of them... This is chess.

Qxh3 and the rook will deliver mate. Ouch.

In the top game Salgado Lopez vs Hector, position after 3 moves is already strange:
