Hastings 1933/34

The 14th renewal of the Hastings Chess Congress was held from December 27, 1933 through January 5, 1934, and featured the World Champion as part of this group of combatants:

Alexander Alekhine, Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander, Erich Eliskases, Salomon Flohr, Andre Lilienthal, Vera Menchik, Reginald Pryce Michell, Philip Stuart Milner-Barry, George Alan Thomas, Theodore Tylor.

Despite Alekhine's presence, Flohr proved a bit more adept at beating the next tier of players. After round 7 he was 1/2-point ahead of Lilienthal and a full point up on Alekhine, then clinched his third striaght clear tournament victory with draws against them.

Now, if 37.Rxd3?? Ra1+ forces mate, and the game continuation 37.Nxd3 e2 38.Re1 Rxd3 led only to a draw. However, 37.d8Q+! Kxd8 38.Rxd3+ wins for White. Details, details.

Hastings (1934/35) was the next annual event of this city.
