Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hastings 1971/72
The 47th Hastings Christmas Chess Festival (1) was held at the end of the year 1971. In expansion over the previous year, sixteen grandmasters and masters were invited to compete in a round robin format at the premier event. The complete list of participants included (in order of ELO): Viktor Korchnoi (2670), Svetozar Gligoric (2600), Wolfgang Unzicker (2545), Anatoli Karpov (2540), Henrique Mecking (2540), Miguel Najdorf (2530), Helmut Pfleger (2515), Ulf Andersson (2510), Robert Byrne (2510), Peter Markland (2510), Bojan Kurajica (2490), Raymond Keene (2465), Victor Ciocaltea (2460), George Botterill (2410), William Hartston (2390), and Michael Franklin (2345). The average of the combined ratings of all the players qualified the tournament as a category XI event. Karpov and Korchnoi tied for first place, each with +7 at the final. In a little over two years the joint winners would be facing each other for the world championship, which would eventually be awarded to Karpov. Thus, his win here puts him alongside Alekhine and Euwe as a player who won the Hastings premier on his way to becoming world champion.

The final standings and crosstable:
