Corus (2004) was the main event. See also Game Collection: 2004 Wijk Aan Zee (Group B). Magnus Carlsen won his 1st of 3 GM norms here with a win in this section. The 3rd Aeroflot Festival (2004) awarded him a 2nd norm, and he achieved his final norm at 6th Dubai Open (2004) by the end of April. Along with many other news sources, the Washington Post featured(2) his 2nd-last 12th round mating attack in Carlsen vs S Ernst, 2004 which finished in 29 moves. Sipke Ernst placed 2nd overall, followed by Jan Smeets and the other members of the field.

The previous main event was Wijk aan Zee (2003). The next was Corus (2005), plus see Game Collection: 2005 Corus (group B) and Game Collection: 2005 Corus (group C).
