Vischer's Opening Traps
Compiled by Vischer
--*--

Neat traps in the opening that I thought were worth making a collection out of.

A good trap to know, all though I don't play the Kan.
NN vs Pandolfini, 1967
(B28) Sicilian, O'Kelly Variation, 6 moves, 0-1

A trap I fell for before: taking the P in the deferred alapin.
Bacrot vs S Guliev, 1993
(B50) Sicilian, 38 moves, 1-0

The infamous petrov trap
NN vs E Fossan, 1991
(C42) Petrov Defense, 5 moves, 1-0

A good early mate; unlike scholar's this is fall-for-able.
Henricksen vs Bjarne Pedersen, 1937
(A52) Budapest Gambit, 8 moves, 0-1

The Damiano's "Defense"
Greco vs NN, 1620
(C40) King's Knight Opening, 11 moves, 1-0

An attempt to hold on to the pawn loses a knight here.
Greco vs NN, 1620
(D20) Queen's Gambit Accepted, 6 moves, 1-0

Here it loses more
J H Sarratt vs NN, 1818
(D20) Queen's Gambit Accepted, 12 moves, 1-0

How not to play the kings gambit.

(C30) King's Gambit Declined, 4 moves, 0-1

Scholar's mate

Destroying Scholar's mate
Adow vs Borissow, 1889
(C20) King's Pawn Game, 9 moves, 0-1

Punishing 2...Qf6
Greco vs NN, 1620
(C40) King's Knight Opening, 7 moves, 1-0

Another Damiano Defense-like game, this time in the KGD
W Knoop vs L Malandain, 1995
(C30) King's Gambit Declined, 10 moves, 1-0

And again, this time the Center Game.
Alekhine vs NN, 1936
(C20) King's Pawn Game, 17 moves, 1-0

Interesting gambit Idea; excellent response.
J Krejcik vs Baumgartner, 1914
(C40) King's Knight Opening, 7 moves, 1-0

A queen sac mate in the opening!
Greco vs NN, 1619
(B00) Uncommon King's Pawn Opening, 8 moves, 1-0

13..Nb6 leads to Polugaevsky's awesome sacrifice line.
Polugaevsky vs E Torre, 1981
(D44) Queen's Gambit Declined Semi-Slav, 40 moves, 1-0

A neat trap in the Dragon Variation.
V Borsony vs A Laustsen, 1956
(B70) Sicilian, Dragon Variation, 7 moves, 1-0

10...axb5 is considered the best move once in the trap!
Kholmov vs V Shinkevich, 1999
(B33) Sicilian, 24 moves, 1-0

Another early smothered mate like in the budapest gambit.
P Hultin vs T Fromm, 1992
(A57) Benko Gambit, 9 moves, 1-0

Another early smothered mate

7.Bxc6+ bxc6 8.Qxd5
P Belmondo vs G Gilardi, 1989
