Bird's Opening (A02-A03): A Reappraisal

As white, the four clear choices are 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4, and 1.Nf3. These are the ones we see without fail at the tournament level. However, there are other systems lying in wait for those practitioners who will study, play, and create innovations that raise them up to a level of respectability and playability that transcends the club level. I suggest Bird's Opening (1.f4) as one of those opening systems. The following games are meant as a study and example of the possibilities within Bird's Opening. As a result, only the best games are chosen, in which black provides the best play possible with few to no opening blunders. Whenever possible GM games will be included, as well as those losses where the opening itself has maintained equality or yielded an advantage for white before the later middle or endgame blunder. Sometimes reviled, often ignored, Bird's is an opening with possibility. Have a look:
