This collection chronicles Bronstein's run for the World Championship. He was the first challenger determined by FIDE's newly developed zonal/interzonal/candidates system to face world champion Mikhail Botvinnik. Bronstein was automatically seeded into the 1948 Saltsjobaden Interzonal where he took clear first a point ahead of Laszlo Szabo. Following this auspicious start, Bronstein shared first with Alexander Kotov in the 16th USSR Championship, and continued the next year earning shared first with Vasily Smyslov in the 17th USSR Championship. Bronstein shared first again in the Candidates tournament in Budapest, this time with Isaac Boleslavsky. Botvinnik was unwilling to play a three way tournament with the two candidates, and so a playoff match of twelve games was devised to determine the true challenger. Bronstein eventually won the match in two tie-break games after achieving an even score in the playoff match. Alas, it was not to be for Bronstein, as he failed to secure his win against Botvinnik in the last two games, despite going in with a score of 11.5-10.5. This collection is to commemorate the greatest run of the challenger who came closest to being world champion. Thanks go to Chessical and WMD for helping me correct and complete this collection.
