Parnu 1937

The city of Parnu, Estonia held its first ever international tournament from August 16th to the 25th in 1937. Masters and national champions from Europe were invited to compete against Estonia's native sons that included Paul Keres, Paul Felix Schmidt, and Ilmar Raud. Among the attendees were Czechoslovakian masters Salomon Flohr and Karel Opocensky, Swedish champion Gideon Ståhlberg, and Dr. Savielly Tartakower. Schmidt all but ran away with the tournament, being felled only by Ståhlberg, but clearly establishing the strength of Estonia and her chess masters as a future international figure in world chess.
