The Pan-Pacific Grandmaster Tournament, was held in San Francisco from March 2 to 14, 1991. It was a first-rate, invitational round-robin competition, which was underwritten by the Mechanics Institute, a non-profit club that supports chess events.

The plan was to have six American grandmasters and six foreign grandmasters make up the field, but one American international master, John Grefe, was invited. Eugenio Torre, the top Filipino grandmaster for many years, took first place with an 8-3 score (+5-0=6). Patrick Wolff was 2nd with 7-4 and Mikhail Tal and Larry Christiansen were equal 3rd with 6-5.

Torre held the lead throughout with the brand of subtle positional play that can be seen in his victory over Zsuzsa Polgar of Hungary, the first woman to obtain the rank of grandmaster.

The players are listed by highest or current FIDE rating:

GM 2662 Joel Benjamin (USA)
GM 2645 Mikhail Tal (Latvia)
GM 2634 John Fedorowicz (USA)
