The Catalan, an opening last popular in the 1970s through the play of grandmasters such as Anatoli Karpov and Gennady Sosonko, is now being seen again at elite level play. The two grandmasters most responsible for this resurgence in the Catalan are former world champion Vladimir Kramnik and Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen. Kramnik first re-popularized the opening with his win over Veselin Topalov after it proved a potent weapon against him at Dortmund 2005. The opening was further on display in the 2006 world championship unification against Topalov. Kramnik soon made it an impressive addition to his opening repertoire for white and one to watch out for along with his infamous Petrov for black. At around the same time, young Magnus Carlsen was experimenting with the Catalan on both sides, achieving impressive results, at first for the surprise value of an older unfamiliar opening, and later for the quality positions they afforded him. Together, the two super GMs have brought critical attention to an opening that creates challenging positions demanding accuracy and that create positions that can be pushed and explored for superior gain. Collected here are all the classical time control games of 20 moves or more that Kramnik and Carlsen have played using the Catalan. Recording their early years in the opening up to their contemporary play, no distinction is made between which side Carlsen or Kramnik play on as their understanding and continuing development of the opening is of significant study value to the student and enthusiast alike.
