This collection chronicles Nigel Short's run for the World Championship. Short was automatically seeded into the 1990 Manila Interzonal where he qualified along with ten other grandmasters for the candidates matches by defeating Mikhail Gurevich in a must-win final round game with the black pieces. Following this promising start, Short competed in several international tournaments during the 1990-1993 championship cycle. He placed first in a few significant events, including Amsterdam in 1991 and again in 1992 and 1993. Short made his presence felt through the candidates cycle as he dispatched fellow countryman Jon Speelman at London in February of 1991, and later Boris Gelfand at Brussels in August of that same year. Short's best result came in his semi-final match with former world champion Anatoli Karpov, when he defeated the world #2 at Linares in April of 1992. Karpov had been the favorite to complete the cycle and face Kasparov yet again. After Short defeated Jan Timman in the candidates final at San Lorenzo del Escorial in January of 1993, and while FIDE dictated the terms of the world championship match, Short resigned as GMA president. He and Kasparov eventually split with FIDE to form a new chess organization to conduct their world championship match outside FIDE jurisdiction. In March of 1993 the two grandmasters invited bids for sponsorship of the match, which would be held under the auspices of the newly formed PCA. The two met and played at London's Savoy Theater, and though Short fought tenaciously against Kasparov, he eventually lost the match 12.5-7.5. In spite of the final score, Short had managed to play several games to winning and advantageous positions, and even beat the mighty Kasparov in the sixteenth game of their encounter. This collection is to commemorate the run of a great challenger who inspired a whole new generation of Western chess players, fans, and enthusiasts.
