US Open 1933, Detroit = 34th Western Champ.
Compiled by Phony Benoni

<34th Western Championshp
Detroit, Michigan
September 23-October 1, 1933>

There is a legend that Reshevsky was asked before the tournament if he expected to win. His reply: "Who is there to beat me?"

He was right. Nobody beat him.

Reuben Fine and <Samuel Reshevsky> continued their domination, followed by two more young New Yorkers in <Arthur Dake> and <Robert Willman>. The next four included three former champions of the regional days; it was now obvious the old generation wasn't going to keep up. The tournament was held at the Hotel Tuller in Detroit, Michigan, and sponsored by the Auto City Chess and Checker Club.

Daily reports in the New York allow reconstruction of the schedule:

Round 1 : Saturday, September 23
Round 2 : Sunday, September 24
Round 3: Monday, September 25
Round 4 : Monday, September 25
Rpund 5 : Tuesday, September 26
Round 6 : Wednesday, September 27
Round 7 : Wednesday, September 27
Round 8 : Thursday, September 28
Round 9 : Thursday, September 28
Round 10: Friday, September 29
Round 11: Saturday, September 30
Round 12: Saturday, September 30
Round 13: Sunday, October 1

The crucial game would have been Reshevsky's win over fine, except that the older man let four draws slip away while Fine swept the rest of the field for a one-point victory.
