Cntr Cntr = Center Counter / Scandi_navian
Compiled by fredthebear
--*--

Site under construction by Fredthebear. Last modification 6/25/17.

Thank you chess.master, azaris, FLAWLESSWIN64.
See Skandinavian / Chigorin for Black compiled by katar.

Most of Fredthebear's larger collections begin with some ancient games, embarrassing traps, famous miniatures, related openings, transposals and gambits at the top of the games list. The meat of the main line opening follows about forty games below.

After 1.e4 d5, White should accept the pawn 2.exd5 and maintain the initiative with easy development. Otherwise, Black can get an improved version of the French defense after 2.e5?! Bf5.

The chess world should refer to 2...Qxd5 as the Center Counter (abbreviated Cntr Cntr here) and 2...Nf6 as the Scandinavian (sometimes shortened to Scandi here). Theory is exploding as White tries new (renews) approaches w/earlier development of the kingside. 3...Qd6 is the latest rage for Black. One ECO code (B01) is clearly not enough, but that's the way it is.

Black can try to recapture the pawn with the king's knight instead of the queen. 2...Nf6 is the modern Marshall variation. It's better than 2...Qxd5 according to none other than Bobby Fischer himself. After 3.c4, Black has the tricky Icelandic gambit 3...e6! shown to favor Black. Or, after the main line 3.d4, Black has the Jadoul gambit 3...Bg4! in which White responds w/the ugly 4.f3.

IMHO 2...Nf6 collects scalps quicker against unwary opponents and has transpositional possibilities, but that's it's only advantage (transposing to Alekhine's Defense for example could become a disadvantage IF White knows the line better). 2...Qxd5 can be as solid as the Caro-Kann but Black must watch the exposed Queen very carefully in order to eventually achieve a Nd5 position. Therefore, over the first 15 moves, 2...Nf6 does get better results at lower levels. Those who play 2...Qxd5 regularly will learn to avoid early snares and get playable middle games in due time without having to do much theoretical study. Author Larry Evans, American champion and friend/consultant of Bobby Fischer, recommends 2...Qxd5 in one of his repertoire books.

Beware that games with 2...Qxd5 then 3...Qa5 and an early ...Nc6 tend to get more violent for both colors than the safer, slower ...c6 version. (It can be argued that Black really can't get away with ...Nc6, or it would be played all the time!) Computer programs might help you confirm or disprove this.

My gut feeling is that 3...Qd6 is the best Black variation of the Center Counter. It seems to be exploited less early on. However, Fredthebear is no expert in this line; it's just a hunch. As with any opening, play what you like, backed up by resource information.

Icelandic Gambit – B01 – 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.c4 e6 Portuguese Gambit – B01 – 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Bg4

The above list is incomplete for now, but it might help clear a few things up. I certainly cannot guarantee that all games are correctly labeled below but the attempt is better than just having each game labeled generically by the computer. Once I get this mess completely sorted out and firm in my mind, I will submit corrections for more specific name labels. Check back in 2019.

Games at the bottom of the list are awaiting proper group placement above.
