Spearheads (Batteries w/a Q) Prod Fredthebear
Compiled by fredthebear

The Queen operates in a long range battery w/Bishop or Rook, together on the same line, or she gets supported when landing on a penetration square, like Scholar's Mate. A supported checkmate from a Spearhead is probably the easiest, most successful scheme for beginning players to execute in the opening and middle game. Many a beginner is soon lost w/out a queen available.

A number of miniatures kickoff the top half of the list. However, this collection goes way beyond Scholar's Mate. Most Spearheads herein do not checkmate directly, but lead to some sort of material advantage or permanent penetration. If nothing else, the increased force count causes a passive defensive response to prevent being outnumbered at the focal point.

O.K. -- in full disclosure, I just lost a quick time control game when a hot shot kid was able to ignore my discovered attack and give an intermezzo check on my second rank, forcing my king to flee into the corner, and then sacrifice to back rank mate me. It's been a long time since I've been back rank mated; all because I was too consumed w/my own attack to see the support check coming. There's really no excuse for yielding an unseen check. (On my previous turn, I hastily moved an en price piece w/a "devastating" threat but also opened his line of attack, so the alluring ground work is understandable. I was pre-occupied w/how he'd handle my threats. He followed Purdy's advice and ignored it!).

One should specifically look for Spearhead battery opportunities where a long-range piece is already aiming, and then join it w/another. It's a powerful force when a heavy piece is able to double on the same line or crossfire through the same square.

I don't like being back rank mated, and I don't like losing to a kid (I've beaten him and his father a handful of times), even if he's talented and has a chess trainer. (Yes, I was a surprised but gracious loser; the kid earned it.) No more Spearhead surprises! No more back rank mates! I'll go back and read "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" again, an easy primer on back rank mates and then do Reinfeld again. Back when I was a lad, I used to read BFTC cover to cover before every tournament so I could drop the bomb on the opponent and not get snookered that way. It's all about instant pattern recognition, right? Mastery is the elimination of mistakes. "Haste, thy great enemy!"

As a result, this collection is my reminder, my training, my punishment to correct the error of my ways. Spearheads turn out to be a very common theme/threat in grandmaster chess as well.

Not all the games in this collection end in checkmate for the Spearhead. Some don't even win at all. However, in most cases, batteries are very useful for attack and defense in chess.

Update: Six months later, the hot shot kid has gained 600 rating points by winning tournaments over other adults. He is now receiving invitations to closed upper level tournaments. My collection work has also helped my game.
