WannaBe: I've made this post a while back, a bit in jest, but also seriously...

You can answer all openings with 1...c5 and be OK. Just some lines have more theories than others.

Now, watch as people jump all over this and starts discussing the merits of 1... c5 against odd openings. =)

  gambitfan: Bonjour,

Y a-t-il des Français sur ce forum ? Des Québecois, des Belges, des Suisses?

  vonKrolock: <Bonjour,

Apr-02-07   schnarre: <Dr.Lecter> Some very sound advice Doc!

I typically use 1...c6 against almost anything White does. :D In non-e4 openings it usually makes White pause, in quite a few cases it throws White off his game.

Apr-02-07   MaxxLange: <answer all openings with 1...c5>

I don't know much about the Sokolsky opening, but I started wondering about 1. b4 c5. Apparently, it's a known alternative to the main lines. Black sharpens up the game with this gambit - seeking positional compensation in the weakened White Queenside, with, I guess, reasonable chances of getting the pawn back.

I think I have somewhere a state chess magazine with an article advocating an early b4 against the Benoni...maybe 1. b4 c5 2. d4 transposes!

<Steve01> Interestingly, 1...c6 is an aggressive answer to 1. b4, intending ...Qa5+ or ...a5, according to my 5 minutes of research. I may actually look into that: it's always nice to have a little preparation for flank openings and rare stuff.

I have used ...c5 against 1 Nc3, which turns out to be quite common.

Apr-02-07   Dr.Lecter: <schnarre> What advice?

<<<<<<<<<<quote of the day>>>>>>>>>>

Act normal. That's already crazy enough.

<technical draw> I don't make up these quotes. I read them from somewhere.

Apr-02-07   Timex: Why does everyone play 1.d4 a lot? The games can get a little confusing. I always begin my games with 1.e4, which can get sharp, but are a little bit more easier to handle on both sides, in my opinion.
Apr-02-07   Dr.Lecter: <timex> Well, it's really to people's taste. 1.d4 leads to complex positions, which people usually prefer to open positions that often result from 1.e4. I am really neither, and I actually prefer 1.c4 or 1.Nf3, but like I said, it's all really a matter of taste.
Apr-02-07   2021: <chessgames.com> is missing a number of correspondence chess players including: Kenneth Reinhart
John Mousessian
Corky Schakel
Keith Rodriguez
J. Barry Noble
Michael Foust
Thomas Halfpap
Kurt Ehrgott
E.H. Fisher
David Novak
Peter Link
Apr-02-07   Aspirador: <MaxxLange:Interestingly, 1...c6 is an aggressive answer to 1. b4, intending ...Qa5> Quite an interesting idea to sacrifice the queen so early in the game.

The bad news is - there is no key to the Universe. The good news is - it has never been locked.

Apr-03-07   Rubion: The 8th European Individual Championships starts today, anyone know if are where the live games will be broadcast?

refutor: <aspirador> i believe maxx lange meants 1.b4 c6 2. whatever ... a5! outflanking the b-pawn. you can try ...a5 on the first move v. 1.b4 but then he can always push.

you can also play 1. ...Nf6 v. everything ;)

Apr-03-07   MaxxLange: <aspirador> that should really be ...Qb6

I at first too thought this would be terrible. But I don't even think it has to be a gambit! 1. b4 c5 2. bxc5 Qa5 3. Ba3 e5 (or 3...e6 may be necessary, but I think not).

technical draw: Somebody help me out here. San Francisco pitcher Russ Ortiz is getting paid minimum wages from the Giants, $380,000. But he is getting paid $7,120,000 from the Arizona Diamondbacks. In other words he is getting paid 20 times as much from a team he is NOT pitching for. Check out this and other crazy baseball salaries here:

Apr-03-07   FICSwoodpusher: <refutor> That statment is 99% correct. The example I would give is similar to the 1. b4 c5 opening. That is, 1. g4 Nf6.

Phony Benoni: As long as we're on the subject, 1...d6 and 1...e6 also look like universal defenses. I'd say 1...g6 as well if it weren't that 1.b3 g6 2.Bb2 might be a bit iffy.

Arguably, 1...b6, 1...Nc6, 1...d5, 1...a6, or 1...just-about-anything would fit the bill. After all, you can argue about anything.

WannaBe: <technical draw> That's what happens when a player gets released by a ball club, and also how the contract is structured.

Better off being an agent, get your guy(s) a good contract, and you get a portion!!

Plus you don't need to work-out, being in the locker room, or catch a red-eye to the next city. Or rub 'Cream' on ya!

WannaBe: Reminder to self, put 'bad' punsters on ignore list.

I'll probably start by adding myself, and then add others...
