 | | YouRang: A bit of controversy at the US Womens Championship.
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
In a blitz game, is it okay to begin making your move before your opponent stops her clock? The rules seem to be unclear. Aside from that, I still dislike the idea of settling a classical chess championship with blitz game. |

In a blitz game, is it okay to begin making your move before your opponent stops her clock? The rules seem to be unclear.> I don't know. Krush wrote an article, and it's posted over at chess life online. USCF posted its reply as well. I watched the video, but it was hard to draw a definitive conclusion. Their hands were moving in such a flurry I couldn't tell whether one player was "pre-moving" in any sense. Anyways, even if that's the case, I dunno if any rules were violated. <Aside from that, I still dislike the idea of settling a classical chess championship with blitz game.> Same here. It seems like an awful idea. I'm not sure if the better chessplayer wins or the player with the better reflexes. Btw, you might want to check out:
Anna Zatonskih
as they're discussing the rules over at that page

 | | YouRang: <littlefermat><I'm not sure if the better chessplayer wins or the player with the better reflexes.> Exactly. We would be presented with an interesting problem if one of the players was physically handicapped, making it impossible to move quickly. Wouldn't blitz play then be a form of discrimination against handicapped people? |

As an aside, there are some interesting reactions from other players to Tony Miles playing on a table to stretch out his back at Tilburg years ago ("Tony Miles: It's Only Me"). |

 | | benjinathan: A small controversy with my kid in his tournament on the weekend which can be resolved by answering the following: May a player say "adjust" or J'adoube" and then adjust an opponent's piece or is it appropriate to ask that the other player centre the piece? In my kid's game his opponent adjusted my kid's piece to a different square than the one my kid thought it was on. My thought, without knowing the rules, was that it would be improper to touch another's pieces except for the purpose of capture. Obviously this could only occur in a game where, as here, the players were not writing their moves. As an aside, I should add that the TD and the kids handled the situation well, so this is not a complaint. |

 | | pawn52: <benjinathan> So long as the piece being adjusted is not placed where its not supposed to be (if there's concerns about this happening, a simple remedy is to have all the player write down their moves)a player is able to do that. |

| Jun-09-08 | | Jim Bartle: Anybody agree that Holland's second goal today was outstanding? Three players needed to play perfectly to make it work: the guys who made the loooong cross-field pass, the perfect ball headed right onto the foot of the oncoming teammate, and the perfect one-touch strike into the tiny area of the net which was unprotected. |
 |

 | | benjinathan: <Jim Bartle> great goal! Exciting game all around. |
 |
| Jun-09-08 | | Jim Bartle: Only saw first half. Who won? |
 |
Jun-09-08
 | | benjinathan: <Jim Bartle> The Dutch. The second half was crazy. |
 |
| Jun-09-08 | | Jim Bartle: Thanks, maybe they'll repeat it on ESPN Intl. tonight. |
 |
Jun-09-08
 | | benjinathan: <Jim Bartle> I think it is worth watching even though you know the outcome. |

 | | WannaBe: Does that mean part 2 and part 3 sucked?!?! :-))) |
 |
| Jun-09-08 | | micartouse: Oh, the good players you mean? Yeah, those pictures were pretty nice too. :) |

Exactly. We would be presented with an interesting problem if one of the players was physically handicapped, making it impossible to move quickly. Wouldn't blitz play then be a form of discrimination against handicapped people?> Wow. That's an interesting point. I hadn't thought about that at all. I skimmed the rules but couldn't find anything about stuff like this. I guess the entire debacle highlights some serious holes. |
 |
| Jun-09-08 | | Jim Bartle: Football question: On Holland's first goal, van Nistelrooy was clearly several steps offside. But...an Italian defender was lying on the ground beside the goal, off the field. Does he count as a defender, making the attacker onside? |

French: No,
German: Maybe,
NBA Referee: I saw nothing!! |
 |
| Jun-09-08 | | Jim Bartle: Speaking of which, anybody see last night's NBA game? One of the Lakers made a steal and was out in front for a jam. He picked up his dribble about the top of the key and took three long strides to dunk. No call. |

Jun-09-08
 | | Phony Benoni: <Jim Bartle> You are obviously unacquainted with NBA Refereeing 101: If the player is slowly dribbling at midcourt, a quarter-step is travelling. If he's a visiting player, even thinking about taking a step is travelling. If the player is going in for a High-Impact Jam Guaranteed To Bring The Crowd To Their Feet And Make Every Highlight Reel Until The Next High-Impact Jam, then travelling does not exist. |

| Jun-10-08 | | Nikita Smirnov: Well here's my bet for the following games of Euro 2008 Switzerland/Austria: Group A
Switzerland-Czech Republic 2 (Right)0-1
Portugal-Turkey 1 (Right) 2-0
Group B
Austria-Croatia 2 (Right) 0-1 (*And I was right that Luka Modric would score) Germany-Poland 1 (Right) 2-0 (*I was also right for knowing that Lukas Poloski would score one or two goals) Group C
Romania-France 2 (wrong) 0-0
Netherlands-Italy 2 (wrong) 3-0
Group D
Spain-Russia x
Greece-Sweden x
Just a little correction. |
