Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Better, but after 1...Kg7 defends. I said this one is tricky!

  technical draw: I like Qc4.

Phony Benoni: 1.Qc4 is probably second best. White can win a pawn after 1...Nd5 2.Qxc6 (2.Qxd5?? Qc1+) bxc6 3.Bxd5 Bxd4 4.Bxc6, but the bishops of opposite colors make a win problematic.

Try <1.Bb2!>. This stops the mate, protects the bishop with the queen, and sets up 2.Qc4 and 2.Qe7 as decisive threats.

tpstar: <Phony Benoni> Great puzzle. Was that an actual game or a composition?

Here's one of my games against Mike Skidmore:

Phony Benoni: <tpstar> It's from a correspondence game between the Riga Chess Club and the Orel Chess Club in 1896. I came across a Googletized book containing some correspondence games from the Riga Club yesterday, and will submit this and a few others.

technical draw: I just saw Nightmare (of bad acting) On Elm St (1). For some reason it wasn't so bad the first time I saw it. I'd rather see the free movies that are coming up this month here:

Nov-02-09   The Rocket: how strong is the free rybka try out version on chessok.com? I tried it now on hard level and I am up a piece for 2 pawns as black.....

Is it the real rybka 3 with only seconds to think or is much weaker than that even?.

HeMateMe: <MaxxLange:> I read somewhere that Karpov used to play a variation of the caro-cann in which he plays the whole game with his king uncastled, in the middle of the board. Seems hard to believe, at GM level. Does anyone know of anygames where this occurs?

Shams: <bruhudson> you aren't thinking of the Fried Liver attack?
Nov-03-09   The Rocket: "HeMateMe" this is one game with it.. and no you dont have to castle in a gm game... just look at Anands game vs Kramnik in the world-championships for instance...

It all depends on the position of course were its often very playable to neglect it

What do you guys think ?

Open Defence: depends on what form he is in, but it seems unlikely that he would take too many risks so I'm not too sure

<The Rocket> After a new version is released, older versions are made available as free downloads. So the current highest rated free download is Rybka 2.2n2 which has several differences from Rybka 3. Even Rybka 2 has a rating >3000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rybka) although I have heard several claims it is easy to beat - most likely because it was not run with optimal hardware or configurations.

Nov-03-09   The Rocket: its strange because on chessok after you have played maybe 15 moves rybka stops playin... doesnt make anymore moves.... anybody experience the same problem?

I had a easily drawn position but never got to play it out!!

Nov-03-09   The Rocket: its says rybka thinking... and it goes on forever.. whereas the previous 15 moves it played after about 10 seconds each.. so I figured logically after 3 mins it wouldnt make any more moves...
