HeMateMe: I was looking at war movies on Amazon, and saw a film about Hitler, called "the Bunker". Big snooze there, but a name jumped out--Anthony Hopkins was playing Hitler! Thats <Hannibal Lecter>!

I wonder if he had that little cage mask on, when he was running around in the Fuhrerbunker?

HeMateMe: I think the story may be a roundabout way for Russia to support Karpov, at least indirectly. Clearly, an investigation of Kirsan, the flake, at the presidential level, is sending a message. Either they want to root out corruption in the Kalmykia Republic, or it is a backdoor boost for the Kremlin's real favorite, Karpov.

This puts Kirsan in a bad light; its a way of telling chess federations "Don't vote for Kirsan", without actually saying it.

May-05-10  Oliphaunt: <WendyGrace> Kirsan wins by bribing the chess federations; especially small third world countries so he get enough no. of votes.

Open Defence: so this will be interesting.. which way will the Indian Chess Federation vote ?

HeMateMe: 1) are the votes made public; are individual votes made available to the media?

2) I would think that, having the world champion in their stable, they would vote for the more respected, mainstream candidate, Karpov. Anand has more to lose by poor leadership in FIDE than do lesser players.

azaris: <Kirsan hits the mainstream news headlines>

The first thing I thought when I browsed the BBC site and saw the words "Russian president to investigate claims by a regional president that he has met aliens on board a spaceship" was KIRSAN!

I wasn't wrong.

HeMateMe: Kaspy and Karpov to be in NYC for a fund raising dinner for Karpov's FIDE candidacy. $250 to be there, $500 for you to be in picture with both of them, and, i think, a private champagne gathering later.

i might do it if it involved a joint simul, but just a hand shake and a photo aren't all that interesting to me.

Robin Williams and Will smith, chess enthusiasts, might be there. Geez, with that much ego, they might have to widen the doorway so everyone can get in. I can just see Robin Williams trying to take over the room, grabbing the mike and going into a string of one liners and rants.
