Dec-22-11  eSpade: HINT: There's a kind of an Apple called a "g5".

What's that? iMac G5?!

  FSR: Amazing to think that I've avoided this contest all these years, until this year. It's a whole bizarre world unto itself.

  JamesBJames: Summit, lancer, and premium are the ones I'm not entirely sure on. Tried some brute-forcing already with openings but no luck.
Dec-22-11  frogbert: well, there are some choices here. consider "predates":

it can start on two different squares (g7/h8) and it can end on two different squares (a1/b2). and for every word, do we count the row or the square number?

gives a number of options, doesn't it?

Dec-22-11  buRnINGbeNd: woooooooooooo!
Dec-22-11  frogbert: fsr, i change the game viewer to text only - achieves about the same thing i guess :o)

  JamesBJames: Nice job, <buRnINGbeNd>. That was really, really convoluted.
Dec-22-11  buRnINGbeNd: each word means a square

apple = g5
paper = a4
summit = g8
munitions = c4
premium = a1
predates = b4 (lol)
lancer = b1

the letters on the search are eprslat. rearrange that to get plaster, who only has one game in the database.

  JamesBJames: I had all the right squares, but I kept trying to make an opening with them. Sort of why I thought G8 for summit and A1 for premium was wrong.

  Domdaniel: Got it! Plaster!! Nooooo....

Sigh.

  Domdaniel: And while A4 is most obvious, A% and A^ are paper sizes too ...

That were close.

  AnimusEtOblivio: Nicely done <Burning>!

These last handful of clues from CG.com have been fantastic quality.

  Domdaniel: I found two games with Kings on a1 and g8 and pawns on the other squares.

You don't want to know...

  Domdaniel: I meant A5 and A6. Coding is catching.

At least they haven't used the one-line-up on the keyboard 'oops' trick this year.

  Domdaniel: So near, so far ... so long.

I'm going to skip the next few. Hope to make it back for the finale.

Dec-22-11  frogbert: <These last handful of clues from CG.com have been fantastic quality.>

yeah, probably. too bad i wasn't even refreshing for new hints - i should've realized there was something going on when people started talking about the apple g5 ... :o)

  MostlyAverageJoe: My browser (on 60-second auto-reload) was still showing the clue as unsolved when I got Plaster...

Congratulations, <buRnINGbeNd>.

  Domdaniel: Strange how this Kaff gets during the Klu hunt ... competitive and cooperative, even altruistic, at the same time.

Quite unchesslike. No wonder they hate us.

  Domdaniel: <MAJ> Me too. Really thought I had it. And I hadn't checked back here for a few minutes, so didn't realize quite how close everyone was.

So it goes.

  PhilFeeley: I had all the seven words before I left work, but didn't know what to do with them. If someone hadn't pointed out eliminating their letters to reveal the message, I wouldn't have known. By the time I got home it was solved.

I'm bad at this :-(

  JamesBJames: Got that super fast. Good thing I'm a college nerd familiar with memes. Had LARSEY-CARDOSA at first; realized the black guy was actually a black MAN, fixed my spelling error...

and then the site went down.

Found the game with google, kept refreshing until the site came back up.

Dec-22-11  ericlgame: RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got Larsen Cardo and then I lost internet for a few minutes. The clue is solved right after I get it back.

  JamesBJames: Oh, I see, they might have taken the site down to fix the philosoraptor error -- originally it was highlighting the a instead of the o.
