| Jan-04-12 | | frogbert: <None of the numbers you cite are closer than two decimal places to one another, so extending the 'accuracy' to nine places is a kind of statistical numerology.> certainly. i was just being lazy when i copied the numbers (mind you, i didn't do any of the math manually). |
 |
| Jan-04-12 | | Wayne Proudlove: Harry Lime, your list is too subjective. You didn't include Wizzard, for example. |

 | | HeMateMe: Do you really think Nirvana was around long enough, put out enough material, to be a "best ever" band? I though longevity should have something to do with it. I think there are only 3 original Nirvana studio albums, put out while Kurt Cobain was still alive. The Doors were only together for five years, though their six original albums are superb. A shame that Morrison couldn't have stayed with us a bit longer. R.E.M. was around a long time, but don't really have "great albums", on a par with the Beach Boy's Pet Sounds. A more fair assessment of the yanks would be to look at our solo performers. We seem to excel in putting out the individual stars: Elvis, Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Lou Reed, Aretha Franklin, James Brown. The UK seems to have the better gruoups, but we have the individual stars. I would put the Mama's and the Papas and Creedence Clearwater Revival in top five, and remove R.E.M. and Nirvana. |

 | | HeMateMe: Vegas has the Rodgers 9-5 favorites to win the Superbowl. The Tebows are 120-1 underdogs. That might be a good bet, the Denver Broncos and the huge odds. Hey, you never know... |
 |
| Jan-04-12 | | Jim Bartle: If we're looking at only bands, I would certainly include The Band, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane in the top five. I guess I'd keep the Beach Boys and REM from the original list. But it does cut out a lot when you say "bands," since the music of people like Neil Young, John Hiatt, Ry Cooder and a lot of others is similar to that of the groups, it's just that there's a frontman. |
 |
| Jan-04-12 | | Wayne Proudlove: I don't agree with HeMateMe that all The Doors' albums were superb and will pass on the cheesy brass and strings on "The Soft Parade". |
 |
| Jan-04-12 | | Wayne Proudlove: The bands mentioned so far are probably right. I would add The Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd. |

 | | Domdaniel: My favorite musicians (composers, singers, etc) are Scott Walker and John Cale. One is an American who has lived in London for most of the past 45 years, the other a Welshman living in New York for most of that time. Whatever this means. |
 |
Jan-04-12
 | | HeMateMe: Oh geez, forgot the Dead and the Jeff Airplane. And Crosby, Stills and Nash. Hard to pick just five. |
 |
| Jan-04-12 | | JoergWalter: <Domdaniel: Whatever this means.> there is a balance: 1-1 in exchanging musicians. |
 |
| Jan-04-12 | | Wayne Proudlove: Domdaniel,
it means you like the two most celebrated avant garde artists in pop/rock. |

| Jan-04-12 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: It seems the corpse of a young woman has been found on the Queen's estate in England. Does history repeat itself? Over one hundred years ago, a member of the Royal family was suspected of being Jack the Ripper. |

| Jan-04-12 | | frogbert: what do you think about this one for a game compilation title, dom: <"my most decisive games"> inspired by the euphoria over lack of draws in reggio emilia, of course. in the first 214 classical, rated games i played (which i know because that was when i gave up on adding every game i played into chessbase) my wld stats were like this: +95 -80 =39 - drawing 19% of my games
it's a knock out on the guys in italy, whose drawing rate is a ghastly 29%. cowards ... |

| Jan-04-12 | | frogbert: maybe i was wrong. possibly they weren't that big. i might have noticed simply because they were a bit into norwegian timber. here in norway we're so small and peasantly surprised every time foreigners take the tiniest interest in us, whether it's our fjords or forests ... |

 | | HeMateMe: A racially motivated murder in England is solved, after 19 years, using new forensic tools. <http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/04/world...> The claim is that London's Met Police force is racist in makeup, thus allowing this kind of thing to go unpunished. <...Changes brought about as a result of the Macpherson Report in 1999 -- which labeled the Metropolitan Police force "institutionally racist" and said its investigation of the murder was fundamentally flawed -- continue to impact how the police and legal system operate today.> |
