May-12-12  dumbgai: Hi everyone, I made a quiz on Sporcle called "chess players by diagrammed position". I took one position from each of 16 famous chess games (including many of my personal favorites) and you have to identify the names of the players (both white and black; last names only are accepted). I think some of you might enjoy it. :)

technical draw: <dumbgai> I recognized two Fischer games. One, of course, the game of the century, but the other one I don't know the opponent.
May-12-12  Jim Bartle: That was fun. I got six and a half (I knew Petrosian for one but not his opponent) out of 16.
May-12-12  King Death: <dumbgai>

1.Anderssen-Kieseritzky
2.This is Short's famous king walk but I can't remember who Black was.

3.D. Byrne-Fischer
4.Samisch-Nimzowitsch
5.Zukertort-Blackburne
6.Kasparov-Topalov
7.Petrosian-Pachman
8.Bogolyubov-Alekhine
9.Levitsky-Marshall
10.Hamppe-Meitner
11.Edward Lasker-George Thomas
12.Morphy-Allies
13.Rotlewi-Rubinstein
14.McDonnell-Labourdonnais (but I'm not sure who was what color!) 15.Reti-Tartakower
16.Glucksberg-Najdorf

May-12-12  Jim Bartle: Did you really know all those, KD? I only knew 2 (it was against Timman, 1991), 3, 6, 7 (only Petrosian, not Pachman), 9, 11, and 12. Maybe if I'd seen a few earlier moves as well I'd have done a little better.
May-12-12  King Death: <Jim Bartle> 50 years of chess hasn't been a total waste I guess.

Shams: Great quiz <dumbgai>, but <King Death>, you aren't supposed to put the answers here, Spoily McGiveaway.
May-12-12  Deus Ex Alekhina: There are some photos on the net showing Carmen Electra, in high heels and bikini, babysitting two young kids. Something tells me that those two kids are now ruined for life.
May-12-12  diceman: <HeMateMe: The average food stamp benefit is only about $4.00 per day, for most aid recipients. That's barely enough to get cheap, unhealthy food. About one third of people in the USA now receive food stamps.>

That’s what’s so hateful about America.
Requiring folks to make $28 a week to “get ahead.”
Both despicable and insidious.

Particularly in an Obama economy.
It almost makes “for the rich” capitalism worth it?

Anyone have any real life experience with a job that pays more than $28 per week?

Did it seem like you could make ends meet?
Did it seem like a suitable alternative to food stamps/ welfare?

What tips and techniques can you offer to overcome the monumental task of $28 a week job?

Were you born into wealth ?
($50 a week or more)

$28 a week.
That’s a whopping $1456 smackers a year.

(what are you supposed to attend college the rest of your life)

May-12-12  dumbgai: <King Death> Good job! However, #1 was the OTHER Anderssen game (poor victim was Jean Dufresne). In #14 McDonnell did indeed have the white pieces.

May-12-12  King Death: <Shams> I'd check it out only if I felt suicidal or something. The original's fine though.
May-12-12  King Death: <moronovich> Thanks, I thought it might be but it doesn't matter, Short's play was spectacular!

technical draw: <SirChrislov> What no Cuba Libre?

I liked whisky sour too but that was more than 25 years ago. Now I'm just sour.

harrylime: Just watched ' This Gun For Hire'

Pretty cool. I think it must have influenced Melville and his 'Le Samourai'.. Catapulted Ladd to instant stardom. And Lake too.
